English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Description

Sleeping ten in the main house and a separate bolthole for an additional two people, this is a great residence close to Ryde centre.

This Grade II listed period house, originally known as Old Ryde Farmhouse, is one of Ryde’s oldest houses, dating back to the 1800s, and was once the home of William Watts, a successful local stationer who could boast Queen Victoria as one of his high profile customers! It has since been extended to provide a fine period home, sleeping up to ten people, with accommodation for a further two people in the adjoining cottage.
This charming terraced house is conveniently located in a conservation area enjoying superb views of the Solent across its wonderfully secluded gardens. The house is arranged over three floors and boasts five bedrooms, with the majority having sea views. The small adjoining cottage offers a twin bedroom with its own bathroom, as well as a living room, allowing the whole property to comfortably sleep up to 12 guests, making it a great location for a large group. The garden is secluded and lawned with many mature shrubs and bushes providing a wonderful private setting. At the rear of the property, and leading onto the street, is a south facing courtyard with a flagstone floor, and enclosed with brick and stone walls.
Within a few minutes’ walk is the Victorian seaside town of Ryde, which is the largest town on the Isle of Wight, and has numerous boutique and independent shops, cafés, restaurants and a fabulous long sandy beach. For history and culture visit Queen Victoria’s former residence, Osborne House, or take a tour of Carisbrooke Castle. The Needles and lighthouse are one of the most recognised landmarks and have plenty to keep the family occupied, alternatively keep the children entertained at Blackgang Chine or Robin Hill, all easily reached by car or public transport. Beach ½ mile. Shop and restaurant 175 yards, pub 350 yards.

Great location, great size house. The beds were very comfortable. However the ‘annex’ was freezing cold with no proper heating, only plug in electric heaters which we were not prepared to leave on through the night, meaning the annex was not suitable for anyone to sleep in. So many light bulbs didn’t work when we arrived, including lamps, the hallway and the annex ‘bathroom’. The front garden was advertised as allowing ‘parking for 4 cars’, however we struggled to get 3 cars in. The gate was extremely old, rickety & rotten and far too narrow for cars to get through with ease. The area was also incredibly muddy and most definitely unsuitable for parking and walking on! The biggest problem we encountered was the terrible lack of hot water. The house is big enough for, and advertised as being able to accommodate, 12 people. But when one person had a bath or shower, the hot water was GONE!! Ridiculous & incredibly frustrating when we had children & babies to bath. The house is in desperate need of some updating to make it more pleasing to the eye. In fortunately for these reasons, we would not return.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you very much for taking the time to write those comments. They are very valuable to us and I am very sorry you had such a difficult stay. I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused. I came to the property the weekend following your stay and I was surprised to discover that the hot water heating system had been modified. It was, in consequence, not producing hot water 24 hours a day as it should have been and I had to wait for it to warm up to be able to take a shower. I can only apologise once more. Going forward, I will ensure that it does not happen again but I will reiterate to the guests that they should feel free to call me, should they encounter such a situation again. Concerning the heaters in the annex, they are electric storage heaters with built in thermostats and should have been turned on before you arrived. I am a bit unsure why it was not the case and will add this to the things that need to be checked before new guests arrive. The temperature is set up to remain over 22 degrees and you can turn the temperature down to what you feel comfortable with at night. There is no problem to leave them on 24hr a day should you wish to do so as the thermostat will turn them off. During my stay, I was very surprised to see how many bulbs were blown out. I went to the local shop and replaced them immediately as they are “standard” bulbs. However, I do understand it should have been checked before your arrival. Not sure what happened here as when I came the week end before Christmas, they were all functioning. I have now bought a lot of “spare” bulbs in case or urgency and will leave them in the pantry. Moreover, I will ensure that all bulbs are checked before new guests arrive in order to minimise this sort of problems. Thank you for reporting this, as it will help us reinforcing the checks we are doing every week. As you requested to arrive at 12.30 pm before the normal time which is after 3pm, we were not able to carry out all the normal checks as we were rushing to make the house clean and heat the main part of the building. In future we will insist people arrive after 3pm. Mud: Indeed after seeing the mud caused by the parking over the holiday period, we have come to the conclusion that the grass needed to be reinforced everywhere where it is not already hard standing (in front of the gates plus the area to the left of the gates where the bins were left by the previous guests). Hopefully, it will be enough to allow to park and avoid the muddy patches in the garden entrance. I will address this at the same time as the gate (currently on order). We will also is remind future guests that there is a cheap 24hr city parking 50m away from the house and that this may be a better option altogether for the guests as it would free up garden space. I am sorry you dislike the decoration of the house. I thought the pictures provided were a truthful representation of this house and therefore you would not be surprised when you arrived. I did not want to oversell it. It is for sure very old (built in 1790) and we try to keep it as original as possible to keep its “cachet” but this is sometimes conflicting with modern comfort. I think we have the right balance but we continuously try to improve. Before Christmas we bought a new freezer and an extra fridge and we have now installed 3 sky mini boxes for multi room entertainment. As mentioned before, I am very sorry you did not enjoy your stay and I want to thank you for taking the time to write up all your comments; it will help us greatly to improve our services.
