A most enjoyable 2 weeks with everything available that one could wish for. Although a Feb/Mar holiday is not the best time to chose the cottage was warm and the water hot so the dog and I were very comfortable. The owner was very friendly and helpful seeing to our every enquiry. A pity later renters will not enjoy the most beautiful snowdrops,

the positives were the location, a minutes walk from the beautiful lake-side and all the lake-side activities and 10 minute drive to Stamford, Oakham and Uppingham and the beds were comfortable. The negatives unfortunately were the lack of wardrobe space, impossible to hang even one person's clothes so we had to spill over into the small lounge area where there are no hooks or anywhere to hang things. Rather tatty decor with pages from an Atlas instead of wallpaper much of which was peeling and unsightly. No light in the kitchen area, although open plan to the lounge this made it a dark corner. The dining area light was broken so a table lamp was provided as a replacement. Seems to be hotel staff quarters above so you are directly overlooked when trying to enjoy the patio table outside. The only bar you can walk to in the evening is the hotel bar which is expensive and soul-less. The inside of the windows had cobwebs so obviously had not been attended to for a while. The tea-bags and biscuits were appreciated and a nice touch to make a first cup of tea but a tiny bit of milk in the fridge would be useful to go with them. The first thing we had to do was to find a shop and there are none within walking distance. It is also a bit of a pain to have to open and close two gates every time you take the car out.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am pleased that the guests found the cottage comfortable and enjoyed exploring the stunning area of Rutland . I'm sorry that there were a few things that they were unhappy with. Regarding the wardrobe, it is small, but does accommodate 6/8 hangers. There is additional storage which comprises of two large drawers under the bed and a chest of drawers in the bedroom. Two of the features walls are covered in various maps, some being of the area. This technique is known as Découpage, which is a technique used by decorators. It gives a very effective result. Unfortunately one of the pendant lights had been broken by previous guests. At the time of the stay, we were waiting on an electrician, but additional adequate lighting had been provided in the form of a standing lamp with the same wattage as the pendant light. There is another pendant light, plus two lamps in the room. The hotel we are not associated with, but usually they are very welcoming. With reference to a corner shop, there are two within walking distance, the nearest being a 5/10 minute walk, depending on pace, or 2 minutes in the car. Both shops seem to sell everything one would need, from bread, papers, wine, to stamps and dry cleaning Regarding the gates, we are in the country side and so as one would expect there will be gates for access to land.

Dated cottage that needs refurbishment. Said dog friendly but did not provide dog poo bags or poo scoop like other places I've stayed in. No WiFi or washing machine unfortunately and a hoover which was missing the brush part! I would expect all of these things for the money charged. Also a £50 charge per dog per week which is extortionate as you would expect it to be in the overall cost.. 😕

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am shocked and rather confused with this review. I would like to address the customer’s comments. Dated / refurbishment - The property has in the past 6 months been repainted and repapered (feature walls), and has had new internal doors that are far more in keeping with character of the property. The kitchen and bathroom were replaced less than 18 months ago. There are new blinds and soft furnishings in the cottage. Dog "poo" bags and scoop - We do provide a scoop for any dog mess, and this was pointed out to the customer on arrival, the customer informed me that she always took her own scoop wherever they went. We do not provide "poo" bags, but there are small plastic bin bags in the general cleaning cupboard outside the cottage if required. Wi-Fi - The cottages do not have Wi-Fi, but we find that the majority of people who stay have Smartphones, and receive Wi-Fi through their phones. We are attached to the hotel next door, where Wi-Fi can be used. I did inform the customer this, with a response that they did not use technology. Washing machine - We do not have washing machines in the cottage, but the customer was aware of this as we had a phone conversation prior to their arrival. The Hoover does have all attachments. The customer had used it a few times, and asked me about the brush rotation; it is designed to pick up dog hairs. The pet charge - The cottage company decide the chargeable rate for a pet stay. The original booking was for a two week stay, but the customer decided to extend her stay for an additional two weeks. This was done direct; I did not charge for the two dogs and gave a very generous discount. During the customers stay I frequently popped in to make sure all was well, and to see if new bed linen etc. was required. I never had any negative feedback, hence being surprised at the comments.

Third time we have stayed at mushroom cottage good value for money excellent location some improvements have been made since we were last there, but even though new internal doors have been fitted they are difficult to close, really just needs a few small attention to some details but overall a great stay yet again.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for bringing to my attention that one of the newly fitted internal doors needed attention. The carpenter has now addressed the "farmhouse" latch. We appreciate your comments, especially being a frequent visitor. We look forward to your next visit.

We loved the location, in the country and near Rutland Water. It was easy to visit Oakham and Stamford - we loved them both, along with Uppingham. We loved the cottage and the owner was pleasant and helpful. Ideal for walking the dog.
