Yorkshire Cottages

The Yorkshire Regional Specialist -Fantastic properties in the most favourable locations. No one knows Yorkshire better!

An attractive cottage in 15 acres of shared grounds with an indoor swimming pool and tennis courts all just 6 miles from York.

Located only 6 miles from the historic city of York, this cottage is part of a group which has been renovated to an extremely good standard having been equipped and furnished with quality fittings and fixtures. Tasteful co-ordinating soft furnishings have been used, and each light, bright property has a cosy open fire set in an attractive red brick surround. Attached to most of the properties is a lovely private patio and lawned garden, making it a great place for younger children to play; barbecues, portable paddling pools and outdoor toys are available. The indoor heated swimming pool, which is open daily all year round for the exclusive use of the visitors to Claxton Grange Cottages, has full changing and shower facilities, and there is also a spacious conservatory to relax in which opens onto a large enclosed lawned area for sunnier days. For the more energetic there is a full sized outdoor tennis court, games room and children’s play area.

Claxton Grange is a perfect base for exploring all the historic attractions of York, including the large medieval minster with its wealth of stained glass. Take a walk along the city walls or visit the Jorvik Viking Centre where the spirit of the Vikings is held captive for all time. Nowhere tells the story of the train better than the National Railway Museum from Stephenson’s Rocket to Eurostar. Art galleries, museums, and guided trips on the River Ouse - why not try the Ghost Cruise on an evening? York has top quality shopping, excellent restaurants and bistros and old timber-framed pubs serving wholesome food and real cask ales. Within easy driving distance is the busy market town of Pickering and the North York Moors beyond. A little further afield are the many seaside resorts and pretty fishing villages along the east coast. Alternatively access to the Yorkshire Dales National Park will take no time at all. Set within 15 acres of well kept grounds, including a lovely wildlife pond with reeds and lillies, all of which have been thoughtfully flood-lit for darker evening strolls Claxton Grange Cottages offer guests a very warm welcome. Shop, pub and restaurant 6 miles.

Fridge too small for a party of 5, carpets & floors stained & dirty, double bed so hard got bruises on hip, only 2 toilet rolls, knives not sharp, no lids on casserole dish, wind whistled through hole in the airing cupboard. Expected to do a full clean, hoover and take rubbish to the car park on leaving the property, not what you expect when you're on holiday and should be included in the cost of rental.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are very sorry the holidaymakers were not fully satisfied with our accommodation, we always advise guests to notify of any problems during their stay so this can be dealt with and rectified, this is stated within the guest manual which a copy is stored within each Cottage. Unfortunately, the guest did not bring up any of these points which could have been actioned and dealt with immediately as follows: We have the same size standard fridge in all 3 bedroom properties; we do have a table top freezer for customers use and would have gladly supplied this if it would help with storage of frozen foods. The cottage is fully cleaned prior to arrival; I will speak to the caretaker regarding the point about the carpet. The double bed - we have never had any complaints regarding the bed, we appreciate that guests may prefer alternative levels of softness for their beds but we are unable to accommodate this unfortunately. Guests are able to request more toilet rolls and kitchen rolls, we supply these initially for when guests first arrive but have further supplies available at reception. The comments regarding the knives not being sharp, casserole dish and noise from airing cupboard, these could have all been remedied had the caretaker been notified. We ask guests to leave the cottage as they have found it, however we do not expect guests to do a full clean of the cottage when they leave, we ask them to take rubbish to the recycle bins to avoid attracting unwanted pests as we are in a rural location and to not leave crockery, cutlery in the sink awaiting to be washed, food in the fridge and ensure all belongings are taken with them.

notes made in-situ:-21 mismatched side plates;only 6 mugs;v old cooker with no roasting tin;no bread bin; broken cafetiere;brush and bucket housed in crockery cupboard;v small old-fashioned fridge not large enough for 6 people;no freezer;no wardrobe in double bedroom;no wardrobe or hanging space in small twin(only 1 bedside cabinet)no headboards on any of the 4 single beds;in larger twin room the beds were under the window so curtains had to be pulled onto windowsill at night as they were in the way;no proper mirrors, only picture framed ones;no welcome tray;no condiments;forks that bend when cutting sausages;broken tv remote;v old electric bar fire only 1 element working;handle broken on dustpan and brush. In short reminiscent of student accommodation. Complex sited just off major York/Scarborough road;v dangerous access/exit;substantial road noise all hours of the day;indoor pool had soggy carpet surrounding it and was clad in some sort of vinyl, not tiles rendering it rather grubby looking

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. The cottage accommodates 6 people of which we ensure there is sufficient cutlery/crockery for this number of people, items do get broken quite frequently by guests of which we have to replace, to avoid increasing tariffs to customers, we may from time to time replace the broken item rather than the whole dinner set, hence it may not all match. The cooker, fridge and other equipment are all inspected and passed as adequate for the cottage. We can supply table top freezers as additional if we had been made aware this was required. Sorry but we do not provide bread bins and if we were made aware the cafetiere was broken, this would have been replaced immediately. The brush and bucket are stored within the cupboard under the sink, not the crockery cupboard? With regards to the bedrooms, wardrobes, we have never received any complaints regarding the storage space within this cottage and where the beds are situated, headboards are not supplied on all beds as requested through feedback from past guests. Mirrors in bedrooms are not part of our inventory but they are supplied in all bathrooms. The cutlery is supplied from a well know supplier of which it is of good quality and we have never had no complaints prior. We state that we do not supply condiments as the cottages are let as "self-catering" we do however supply all towels/swimming towels, washing up liquid, kitchen rolls, toilet rolls and tea towels which a lot of other self-catering accommodation do not offer at no extra cost as we do. The Electric fire, this was working prior to arrival and was tested, this is not the only means of heating as the cottage is fully central heated and have open fires of which fuel can be purchased locally if you would like to use the open fire. We were not aware of a broken TV remote and will look into this and also the broken dustpan and brush. We are situated in an ideal location to access north Yorkshire moors, the coast, York City; we are also on a local bus route which operates every 30 minutes. The A64 can be busy during peak times and it is sometimes easier to turn left coming out of the cottage entrance and detour through the village of Flaxton/Claxton rather than giving way to turn right on to the A64 to York. The cottages are set back some distance from the road and we have never had a single complaint in the years we have been open with regards to noise from the road. In fact, many guests have commented how quiet and peaceful the site is! The indoor pool has safety matting around to avoid accidents and slips, we are very pleased to say that we have not had any accidents within the pool from slipping etc. and the safety mat has been a major factor of this. Had we fitted a tiled floor, I am certain we would have experienced accidents when children are running excitedly around the pool. In closing, I would just like to say we are very sorry that the customer was not fully satisfied with their accommodation, we had not been approached by the customer at any point during their stay to advise of these points, had we been contacted, we would have endeavoured to resolve the said comments to ensure the customers stay was as expected.
