Description

In an AONB, guests can enjoy this peaceful holiday cottage by the sea, ideal for couples, friends and families of 4.

Coastal working farm with spectacular sea views.

Set on a 500-acre National Trust farm at Wembury point within the glorious coastline of the South Hams, this spacious cottage enjoys stunning sea views adjoining the owners’ farmhouse. New Barton Cottage’s location is superb – just 250 yards from the magnificent South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the Wembury Bay marine conservation area, there’s a plethora of things to see and do in the area. The busy working farm stocks beef cattle and sheep, surrounded by picturesque arable land, and there’s also a small wedding venue barn for hire on site. Nearby, Wembury’s beach features rock pools, a National Trust café, horse riding and a sandy beach that’s popular with tourists in the summer. Here you will also find the South Devon coastal footpath, so don’t forget to bring your camera, as there are stunning coastal vistas of Mewstone Island and across Plymouth Sound to the Cornish coastline. On a clear day, you can even spot the lonely Eddystone Lighthouse, standing vigilantly 13 miles off shore. Shop, PO and pub 1½ miles.

We stayed for a week at end of September. The cottage looked lovely from the pictures, but unfortunately it did not live up to expectations when we arrived. Firstly, the main image advertising the cottage is NOT where you will be staying - this is the owners cottage. The rental property is actually the flat roof extension at the back! We feel this was slightly dishonest of the website who we booked the cottage through as we were led to believe the pretty stone cottage was where we would be staying! Unfortunately the interior of the cottage although very clean is very tired and dated. The sofas are incredibly uncomfortable - the seats are actually broken. This is not ideal as after a day of walking along the coastline, you need a comfortable place to sit in the evening. The furniture is all of the rooms is very old (damp smelling) and creaky. This cottage just needs some new furniture and a bit of an update and it would be brilliant. The views from the lounge and bedrooms is beautiful - straight out to the ocean! The owners were also very friendly and welcoming.

The Cottage is well equipped and very comfortable for two adults. It is attached to the farm house but has its own private garden and driveway. It is stunningly situated, just a field away from the cliff path and there are wonderful panoramic sea views from both the bedroom and the sitting room. The peace and tranquillity of the area suited us very well, it was, however, mid March and a very wet and windy week when we stayed there, so few people were out and about to invade our privacy. There is a small village store in Wembury for basic items but I would recommend that you take with you all the food you need for your stay. The pub in the village does serve good food.
