Description

Myrtle Cottage is a homely property in a prime position for exploring all that the wonderful South Devon has to offer.

This charming, white-washed, thatched holiday cottage, end of a row, dates back to 1750 and is set on the main road in the village of Chillington, in the heart of South Devon only 9 miles from Salcombe. A superb location for exploring the many beaches, coves and pretty villages dotted along this stretch of South Devon. Only 2 miles away is Torcross, with the sea on one side of the road and the freshwater lagoon of Slapton Ley on the other. The local estuary town of Kingsbridge has a variety of shops, a museum, cinema and sports centre. There are a wide selection of beaches in the area, including dog friendly ones. Salcombe can be reached by either road or by a small passenger ferry once in east Portlemouth. Boating trips, hire boats and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe/Kingsbridge estuary. Visit historic Dartmouth with its bustling harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. In the opposite direction is Plymouth with something everyone, including the historical port with its Navy connections, aquarium, theatre, shops and museums. The breathtaking scenery of Dartmoor National Park is only 40 minutes away from its southern tip of Ivybridge. There are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Local shop/post office 200 yards, pub 150 yards.

Large beamed living room with wood-burning stove (decorative use only) and wooden floor. Kitchen with dining area, tiled floor and French doors leading to rear garden and flagstone patio. Kitchen with tiled floor. Wooden turning staircase to first floor: Double bedroom. Twin bedroom with zip & link beds (can be 5ft double). Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

Had a lovely stay in this cottage, parking was 100yards away approx, it had everything we needed including buckets and spades to borrow. Visited many beaches, national trust properties and towns.

Cosey and comfortable. Lovely location too. On a busy road but was not a problem.

Unfortunately the noise of the busy road was a problem for us. We knew it was on the main road but our fault, thought it would be a quiet village with minimal activity - how wrong. We left 2 days early as it was too much. The cottage is lovely but needs a deep clean and a bit of TLC. The sofas were very, very uncomfortable and need replacing. I would also recommend that the fault with the chimney is fixed as the woodburner is a real plus point if it works. The Bear & Blacksmith was fantastic, great food. The price was great value though even with our negative comments.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am pleased you thought the cottage was great value for money, I agree about the wood burner but our insurance has changed the rules on the height of the chimney. As we are listed we have had to get permission plus make sure structurally it is sound to take the additional height which all takes time. As for the sofa - I have never had an issue - apart from staying awake.

This is a lovely cottage. It is really well equipped with thoughtful additions like a freshly baked cake and a pint of milk ready for our arrival. It is right on the road but that was made very clear in the description and the bedrooms face the back with lovely views. It is well located near stunning coast. The village has a shop and pub which is friendly and serves good food. We thoroughly enjoyed our week there.

Very welcoming, a cream tea and milk were left for us. Main bedroom was very small and the bed was noisy. Bathroom was very small and no grab rail for the in bath shower and not a decent mirror. The oven took ages to heat up. It was very well equipped but we have been to other cottages where there were games and videos for children. A tumble drier would be useful considering the weather you can get in the West country and it is in a beach/sailing area.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am glad you had a lovely time in Devon - I spoke to your wife as you had accidently taken something from the Cottage home in error. I asked about the oven and there were no reported problems. I have tried to put a selection of games / books / DVD’s in the Cottage but obviously unable to cater for all ages. As you had lovely weather, the towels would have dried really quickly in the sunny south facing garden. The description in the brochure gives you a list of what is available in the Cottage and with pictures of most of the rooms.
