At the base of dramatic cliffs on the western edge of Seil Island, lies this neat white-washed holiday cottage.

Excellent sea views

At the base of dramatic cliffs on the western edge of Seil Island, the neat white-washed cottages of Ellenabeich were built by the slate quarrymen working on nearby Easdale Island. In its heyday 600 families lived both here and on the Island and the industry thrived until 1881 when severe storms flooded the quarry. Today Ellenabeich is a peaceful and picturesque holiday destination. The property was originally the workshop of the late C. John Taylor. In a beautiful location on the waters edge facing the jetty with wonderful views of the seascape. The ground floor apartment is ideal accommodation for 2/4 people and can also be booked with property W40217 to sleep up to 8 people. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

All on ground floor: Living room with double sofa bed/dining room/kitchen. 1 double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Laminate floors throughout.

Our initial reaction to the property was it looked clean and a good size. The fitted kitchen was clean and very well equipped with plenty of basics like plates and cups but also had a good stock of casserole dishes, utensils, and pans. But the hob was a nightmare to work as the settings have rubbed off so no idea which hob plate was on or at what setting. The oven is the same but there were instructions in the drawer for it so that was manageable. The fridge was the same, could not get a happy medium with it and as the door on the freezer section was broken off it tended to freeze all the food we had in the fridge. The lounge was bright and airy with a big window over looking the harbour, but the window did not open and was stuffed with paper and black bags I assume to keep the rain out. This made for a very warm lounge when the sun shone as no means of venting. The smoke alarm did not have a battery in, which I pointed out to the owner, and he said it was electrical but he was aware it was faulty and needed repaired. A handy cupboard contained a lot of useful tourist leaflets and a few books and dvd's. The bedroom again appeared clean but I dropped something and had to move the bed to get it out and it was very dusty and full of dog hairs underneath. All the pictures could have done with a dust and there was a layer of surface dust on all the surfaces. Plenty of cupboard and drawer space to unpack for your stay. Bedding was all clean and looked fairly new, bed was uncomfortable with springs digging into me. Towels provided were a great size ( bath sheets) . The bathroom again was clean apart from some mould on the silicone sealer and a fine layer of dust. The bathroom has the back door that gives access to the back garden. Shared back door was a great area though one of the bench sets looked past its best with rotten wood on spars and table top. Did not see a barbecue ( but would not have used it anyway). The free £10 of electricity was more than enough, think we went through less than £5 of it. The owners were friendly and approachable. Offered me a use of the phone to call my daughter as there is no mobile signal in the village. The location was stunning.

We had a lovely stay in Ellenabeich and the owner of the annex was very helpful and kind - thank you. I would say that this property is in need of some TLC (a lick of paint and some new bed linen / towels would help). It is clear that pets are allowed and the area is great for dog walkers, but we do not have a dog and the annex could have done with some ventilation to eliminate the doggy whiff before we arrived.
