Description

A characterful cottage with a cosy lounge and lots of original features. Walks from the door and just a short drive to southern Lakeland.

Millers Cottage is an 18th-century, stone-built, Lakeland detached house with a lot of character and a host of original features, such as slate flagged floors, oak beams and traditional doors. The cottage is very welcoming, warm and cosy, with a charming atmosphere. This holiday cottage makes the perfect ’home from home’ and a great place from which to explore this side of the South Lakes. It nestles at the end of a private narrow lane on the edge of the old village, surrounded by woodland. There is a children’s loft den (unheated), which is great for the family with lots of toys and games. On the doorstep is the Duddon Valley to the west of Coniston, arguably one of the ’undiscovered hidden gems’ of the Lake District National Park. There are great family walks from the door in many directions including those taking in the wonderful fells, waterfalls, crags & streams. Just a short drive from Coniston, Hawkshead, Ambleside, Grasmere, Windermere, Bowness, Tarn Hows and the Grizedale Forest. Beach 10 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Ground floor: Living room with beams and slate floor. Dining room with slate floor. Kitchen with tiled floor. 1 double bedroom. First floor: 3 bedrooms: 1 double (5ft) with en-suite shower room and toilet, 1 twin, 1 bunk. Bathroom with small bath and toilet.

Woodburners in living room and dining room included. Economy 7 NSH, gas, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Travel cot. High chair. Three Freeview TVs. DVDs. CD. Playstation 1. Electric hob. Gas Rayburn. Combi microwave/oven/grill. Washing machine and tumble dryer in ground floor bedroom. Dishwasher. Freezer. Wi-fi.Telephone-honesty box. We liked the peaceful and chilled out atmosphere of Miller's Cottage very much. We all relaxed in the breakfast room with its large dining table and comfy sofa and played cards and chatted. It was the centre of our stay. We liked the bedrooms, especially the master bedroom which has a very comfortable king size bed (I am six ft 3ins tall!), but the downstairs bedroom is a bit on the dark, dingey and damp side unfortunately. The well-stocked kitchen was great and met all our needs. The location was charming if a little remote. The narow lane to the cottage and parking arrangements that had been a negative factor for some reviewers on cottages.com website posed no problems for us at all. We were lucky perhaps to not meet any vehicles coming the other way every time we drove in it and we managed to park the cars as instructed with no problems ensuing. Having three TVs available was very useful with 8 people staying and five of them under 23! The DVD collection was extensive and went down very well. The book collection is also extensive and went down very well with my wife and sister. The instructions in the guest manual need updating in some areas relating to household goods, electrical appliances, etc. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the cottage to anyone. Please don't be put of by the long narrow lane and parking arrangements!

The cottage was fantastic with walk from the door, out the way and private. Plenty of space for everyone and the dog loved it. The only bad point in our eyes is it could be bettered if there was a downstairs toilet, plus the road to the house is a bit tight. Would have been a 10/10 from me as everything else was perfect. Thanks.

Good points are the location, you are close enough to some of the bigger lakes but also far enough away from the mass of tourists. The village is lovely, with 3 good pubs, shops and a simply brilliant bakery and some excellent views as you walk to and from the cottage. The cottage itself is'nt great! The cleaning company employed to clean between guests should be challenged as general cleanliness was poor. All down stairs curtains need taking down and cleaning The rug in the breakfast room is disgusting Using a wipe down / reusable table cloth is fine but not when it's covered in stains for new guests! The cloth sofas have seen better days... A long time ago!! There are cob webs all over... I know it's an old cottage but this isn't good enough!! The downstairs bedroom is not fit for purpose and shouldn't really be used/marketed as such. A large party such as ours (6 adults & 2 children) will find the bathroom facilities sub standard... You only have the ensuit to shower in as anyone over 5 foot would find their head touching the shower over the bath in the main bathroom... There's also no water pressure from this so you are left to stand under a trickle. The master bedroom and ensuit are lovely even if you do go through the bathroom part to get to the bedroom. The log burners would not take, even with the purchase of fight lighters. A decent welcome book is left out for you with relevant info inside but having stayed in rental properties before we were disappointed there was no effort in terms of a welcome pack... Eg bread, milk, tea, coffee etc... Im not talking a weekly shop just £10 of essentials to get you started. We had a note left saying if the dishwasher leaks please call this number... We didn't use the dishwasher as a result. The lane to the cottage is tight and parking is only available for 2 cars but that's made clear before you book and so it wasn't a big deal. Overall we were disappointed with the cottage.

Our group were delighted with this cottage. The kitchen is so well equipped and some of the finishing touches (such as providing firewood) were well received. The bedrooms are all very comfortable. The only downside is the parking can be a little bit tricky, but we were so happy with the overall stay, this didn't really matter.
