Description

A perfect retreat enjoying use of many onsite facilities yet close to attractions of the area and beaches at Westward Ho!

"Deep in Tarka the Otter country where the river glides beneath the trees and time stands still..."

Orford Mill lies alongside the River Torridge in a beautiful wooded valley, nestled below the historic town of Torrington. With its air of peace and tranquillity, abundant wildflowers and river life, it became the setting for Henry Williamson’s magical story of Tarka the Otter. Indeed, the mill wheel in which Tarka hid from the hound Deadlock was at Orford Mill. This superb location makes a wonderful holiday base, especially for families, with sandy beaches on the North Devon coast only 10 miles away.
The complex consists of a Grade II listed water mill and manor house, now converted into nine delightful cottages, all equipped to Visit Britain ‘4 Star’ standard. Most overlook the charming ornamental courtyard with its ponds and flowerbeds. Riverside is detached and overlooks the river. All cottages retain character features such as exposed beams and stonework, and each is furnished in an individual style to a very high standard. Guests can enjoy an indoor heated swimming pool, with lovely river views, as well as a spa room and all-weather tennis court, games room and fenced outdoor children’s play area. There is an on-site cafe with wi-fi (open 9am-9pm). In addition, fishing rights are available on 200 yards of river (bring own licence, or avail locally at cost). All the waterways are safely fenced.
The countryside around Orford Mill is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty at close quarters. Adjacent to the grounds are the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor, and other local attractions include Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Orford Mill adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.
The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips out to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, whose narrow, cobbled main street descends at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. To the south, the cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.
Orford Mill offers very attractive accommodation set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens with streams, waterfalls and the water wheel which is still operational. Excellent as a touring base, it makes a good choice for a holiday whatever the weather. Shop ½ mile.

The cottage was nice and clean but unfortunately owners did not gave us access to hot pool and kept on making excuses. The swimming pool was heated below 30 degree mark so not properly heated for children especially for winter season. Our main reason behind booking was the use of pool and hot tub facility but we were disappointed and decided to leave early. Initially, I was told that some work with the boiler was going on to raise the temperature but then owner informed me that we could not use hot tub facility for 2 days as he was going to the court to be a witness.. One one occasion we been told that hot tub has been booked but we couldn't see anyone accessing the facility as the lights were always off in that room. I wish if they could have stated that hot tub won't be available due to court proceedings then it would have saved our time and money... I asked for some compensation as we decided to leave early but owners did not agree to give any refund..finally heating for cottage was controlled from outside by owners so it only came on for few hours at set times..again without heating cottage was very cold..otherwise cottage was clean and stay inside was cozy.

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are rather disappointed to read your review. We understand that you were unhappy as you were unable to use the hot tub however; the Important Booking Information on the Cottages.com website clearly states that children under the age of 4 should not use the hot tub. Your children, one under 4 years old and one a baby in arms, were not permitted to use the spa room facilities. It was only after a few days, and a member of the Cottages.com Customer Services Team reiterating this information, that you accepted these rules. Our spa room is for use by appointment. This ensures privacy for the duration of your usage and enables us to clean between groups. You made arrangements on two separate occasions to use the hot tub but unfortunately, you did not use the facility. We accept that we were away for 24 hours (not 2 days) during which time guests were not permitted to use the hot tub as were not present on site. You had already told us that you were leaving early for other reasons and we feel it most unfair that you state you left early because of the hot tub. There are many other facilities at Orford Mill, which you used, including the swimming pool – which is heated to 30 degrees and very comfortably warm for children, the games room, Heidi’s hideaway and the play area. The cottage is fully centrally heated. At no time during your stay was it “very cold”. The heating was on every morning from 6am – 11 am and every evening from 5pm – 11 pm. The cottage is fully insulated with walls 3 feet thick, and stays very warm. All the duvets are 13.5 tog and there is an electric convector heater in the living room for extra heat so it is a little difficult to see what more could be provided.

Although this was a reasonably nice base for our holiday, it was totally let down by the owner. It states "family friendly" but was far from it... the children were told to be quiet, dont run around, dont be rough with the play equipment etc, dont jump on the furniture, dont touch things.... (all within the first 5 minutes). I'm sorry but no child is perfect and although my kids NEVER jump on furniture, they like to run around and be loud and play, they are children... its what they DO!!!! If you dont like that then you should not be advertising as a family destination. I was made to feel on edge from the moment we arrived.. did not feel welcome AT ALL. The games room was old, dirty and had hardly anything in it... When we asked where the hot tub was, the instant reaction was that the children could not use it, so we again felt we had paid over the odd for things we could not use. I think the owner would be better suited to cater for older clients, who would appreciate the antiqueness of the place, who dont have children and wont make noise and are happy to buy a cream tea and just sit!!!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Orford Mill is our home as well as our family business, and we work very hard to keep everything up to the 4 star standard awarded to us by Cottages 4 You, this includes the games room, which is most definitely not old and dirty, and is as pictured on the website. We are able to welcome our guests personally and when we greeted your family upon arrival at Orford, we politely requested that children are supervised at all times when using the facilities and refrain from damaging furniture and equipment. We are sorry if you were unhappy with this however, we work hard to maintain our beautiful cottages and endeavour to provide a good service to our customers by providing high standard accommodation, furnishings and facilities. Our spa room is unsuitable for children, whereas our indoor swimming pool – heated to a very comfortable 30 degrees – is ideal for children where they can play. As Owners, we like to maintain our properties to offer high levels of cleanliness and comfort and we will continue to endeavour to maintain our high standards.
