My daughter stayed in Mallards Lodge whilst we stayed in Lodge 46. We were obviously spoilt as this lodge was welcoming and extremely cosy with many extras. Mallards was extremely basic, 12 lights bulbs were either not working or non-existent and it appeared that the electrical items had not been PAT tested for 3 years. My daughter would have liked to clean the carpets but the vacuum cleaner did not work. She paid about £85.00 more than we did for Lodge 46.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. I have contacted our maintenance man with the instructions to rectify any shortcomings. Mallards Lodge enjoys uninterrupted views of the lake and the island within it. The sunsets can be spectacular over the lake. Out of all the lodges at Hartland Forest, only four, or possibly five have an uninterrupted view of the lake. Holiday makers who enjoy views would be well advised to ensure that they book one of these lodges. I am arranging to stay in Mallards Lodge myself in the spring with the intention of making it at least as good as any other lodge on the site.

We had a lovely time at Mallards Lodge. This area of North Devon has a lot to offer but you do need to be prepared to drive for any shopping or attractions. There are at least 2-3 miles of narrow lanes before you hit the A road in any direction. We had teenagers and a younger child, so enjoyed 4 local beaches, swimming, surfing, looking around coastal villages and going to Milky Way adventure park. The cabin, although compact, was well designed and easily accommodated 6 of us, which was important a the weather was patchy. The kitchen/dining/living room area worked well giving different areas for TV, reading, games and cooking. All the equipment and electronics worked well. The decor and standard of furnishing was good. Two bathrooms and enough storage space really helped too. My only comment is that the decking needs repairing in parts and is well overdue a coat of paint. This would make the whole property look so much better. The site is pleasant and although there are a lot of cabins, we never felt crowded and the overall feel is quiet. There was a mixture of families and older couples, some of whom seem to be owner occupiers and some holiday renters. The private fishing ponds are pleasant although the keycode we were given initially was wrong. Mallard Lodge is set away form the road which did make it quieter and more private, but would not suit anyone who had difficulty carrying luggage 20 yards or so.

Response on behalf of the owner; We are rather surprised and disappointed to learn that the property was not presented to our usual, high standard. We apologise for the shortcomings listed which have been brought to the attention of the cleaning contractor.
