Description

Set near where Glastonbury Festival is held, this Grade II listed cottage offers excellent opportunities to explore beautiful Mendip countryside.

This charming cottage is part of the grounds of Longbridge House, an historic house, famed locally for being where the Duke of Monmouth stayed, before and after the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685.

The accommodation, which is designed for 2 people, retains many original characteristics with a high vaulted ceiling, beams and thick stone walls. There is also a stylish, open-tread, spiral staircase to a vaulted, galleried bedroom which looks down onto a gorgeous chandelier and over the main living area, giving a great sense of space.

Steps lead to a sunny south-facing decked area complete with Roman well, views over surrounding buildings, and backing onto the owner’s garden with a vegetable patch, fruit trees and chickens!

Attractions nearby include Shepton Mallet high street which is within walking distance, convenient for picking up the morning paper, a pint of milk, a takeaway or an evening meal in a restaurant. The sleepy village of Pilton, where the Glastonbury Festival is held, is 3 miles away, the city of Wells with its cathedral and Bishops’ Palace is 5 minutes’ drive, and timeless Glastonbury, with its abbey ruins and famous tor, is a 15-minute drive.

Bath is 40 minutes away with its Georgian architecure, Roman Baths, Royal Crescent, Thermae Bath Spa and abbey, and the Royal Bath and West Showground is a 5-minute drive. Longleat House and Safari Park is 20 minutes by car, and the spectacular Cheddar Gorge and Caves and Wookey Hole Show Caves are within 20-25 minutes’ drive. The beautiful Mendip countryside is right on the doorstep and the coast is within striking distance. For ‘shopaholics’, Kilver Court Designer Emporium is 1 mile down the road, plus the designer shopping outlet centre ‘Clarks Village’ is about a 15-minute drive away at Street. Bristol airport and the city of Bristol are both approximately 50 minutes away, and the nearest train station is Castle Cary, approximately 6 miles away. Shops, pubs and restaurants 500 yards.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen. Shower room with toilet. Open-tread spiral stairs to double (5ft) galleried bedroom.

Electric central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. DVD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Use of washing machine (in external utility). Dishwasher. Freezer. Wi-fi. Courtyard with seating area, decking and furniture. Parking (1 car). Welcome pack. No smoking. NB: Pond in courtyard, steps in garden.

Cottage was fantastic. Very cosy and beautiful inside. Very secure. Peaceful and quiet. Perfect location for shops and restaurants. Absolutely ideal for a couple. There were also lots of leaflets and guides which were very helpful. The welcome pack was also a lovely surprise and very useful.

This is a lovely little cottage. In a very quiet spot. Also a good central area for touring somerset. Close to shops etc for stocking up on what you need . Although the owners, give you a very good start with a welcome package. So if you have a long drive you don't have to rush straight out to get milk ,tea bags etc.

A delightful cottage. Hosts were really nice and welcome pack was much appreciated. Sitting on the swing on the garden terrace in the autumn sunshine was sheer joy! Shepton Mallet was a convenient location for visiting the lovely area but was a little disappointing itself, quite a lot of rubbish on the streets and the High Street / Market Cross area rather run down.

Lovely cottage , location couldn't have been better, ideal if you have a pet. only missing extra setting, a separate armchair would have been great. clean , warm and lovely welcome pack

Response on behalf of the Owner; Many thanks for your review of our cottage and your lovely comments. Regarding your idea about perhaps having extra seating such as an armchair; we would love to have included an extra chair but as the lounge area already has a table, 2 dining chairs, a nest of tables and a settee unfortunately there just isn’t enough space for another piece of furniture. Many thanks for suggesting it though.

The cottage on the whole was OK, kitchen items needed updating, especially the oven which was dated and grubby. The cottage was a central distance from all places we visited, however Shepton Mallet was a very big let down. Very run down, shame as you could see that at one time it was a thriving market town, also, very poor for eating places within walking distance.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Many thanks for your review and your comments which if I may I will reply to one by one. I am very surprised and concerned that you found the kitchen in need of updating as it was completely replaced less than 3 years ago along with the kitchenalia at the same time. We felt that cutting edge modern cupboards would not fit with the style and age of the cottage and so chose a more vintage and traditional style. We have also undertaken over the last 18 months a programme of replacement and the microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and freezer have recently been replaced. We take on board your comments about the cooker needing to be replaced and as this was next on the list to be changed, this was replaced approx. 3 weeks ago. I am sorry that it fell below our usual standards for your holiday. In terms of Shepton Mallet, I am surprised that you felt it was rundown as many of our guests love the quiet charm it offers especially with the main high street being so at approx. 300 yards away from the cottage, making it ideal to get a newspaper, pint of milk or takeaway. It feels a little unkind to review the entire town within your review of our cottage and effectively hold us responsible for the town failings as you must understand that cottage owners have no control over entire towns they are located within. In regards to your comment about the lack of eating places within walking distance, I was extremely surprised as there are 6 restaurants (Italian, Indian, Pub, English, Portuguese & Fish) several bustling cafes and half a dozen takeaways all within walking distance from the cottage. When we check in guests we let them know that should they want anything or have questions about the local area we are usually on hand should they wish to ask. If you didn’t find enough information in the guest folder and had asked us about eating places we would have been very pleased to have helped you.
