Description

Long Wood boasts a peaceful location which is ideal for families and there is even a children’s play area nearby.

Set in a secluded position high in the Mendips above Cheddar Gorge and just 3 miles from Cheddar, these attractive barn conversions make an excellent base for walkers and nature lovers. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is rich in bird and wildlife, including badgers and deer (which visit the farm). Animals on the farm include calves, pygmy goats, alpacas and guinea pigs. Nature trails criss-cross the surrounding hills, easily accessible from the farm, and the whole area is one of immense historical and geological interest.
Among the many places of interest to visit are Wells cathedral in England’s smallest city, Glastonbury Tor, the caves at Cheddar and Wookey, Longleat and several NT properties including Montacute House and Stourhead and King John’s Hunting Lodge in pretty Axbridge. Excellent beaches and seaside entertainment can be enjoyed at Weston Super Mare and Brean, and there are many charming villages to be explored, along with the rugged landscape of Exmoor National Park, famous for the native ponies. The Georgian Heritage city of Bath is easily reached with its beautiful architecture, Roman Baths, Abbey and fine selection of shops and restaurants. Several golf clubs are available locally together with horse riding, coarse fishing and trout fishing at Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes. Very good local inns and places to eat. Please note: Ramscliff Cottage (ref EGA) and Long Wood (ref EPH) can be booked together to accommodate up to 7 guests.

We had a lovely peaceful stay at Long wood. Our 2 year old son loved being able to see the alpacas and goats every day. Puxton park a great place to visit with toddlers, so much for them to do.

Great place to be located for walks and Wells. The cottage was extremely well equipped; everything you could possibly need for adults and children. All finer details thought of that you may need, such as tissues, cleaning materials. Lovely gifts on arrival : chocolates, wine, and essentials like milk and tea/coffee. Chris and Sue were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The only things that would have made our stay perfect would've been a three piece sofa set that was well upholstered and firm - ours had definitely seen much better day. It was dated also and not comfortable as so very soft and well worn. A hand shower in the bath would have been useful, particularly as the shower downstairs was very light on power. We did have a wonderful 4 days. Thank you.

There was only one downfall here and that was the heating system. It wasn't working when we arrived so the cottage was cold. My husband and the owner managed to get it going but it went off again and wouldn't work. The next day the owner tried again unsuccessfully but said he would call a plumber who never arrived. They did provide us with a couple of heaters but when they were on together the electricity kept tripping out.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We were very sorry about the central heating problems experienced by you and your family. There was an intermittent fault in the boiler and the central heating engineer had to order a new photo cell. The family arrived on a Friday for a 3 night stay over the bank holiday so we were unable to resolve the issue immediately. However we knew nothing about the electricity tripping until we read this review. We do live on site and ask visitors to let us know immediately of any problems so we can do whatever possible to help.

The cottage was wonderful - clean, spacious, brilliantly well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The location was lovely and the owners were welcoming. Our children are teenagers so not really fussed about helping out on a farm but if they had been younger then they would have been able to help with the animals, play on the playground and generally have a great time. The cottage is at the top of Cheddar Gorge. It was really good for days out in Cheddar, Wookey Holes, Wells and that area though it took longer to get to Bath and Bristol than we had first thought - how well the location suits you depends on your priorities. We did a day out in Bath which was great and spend other days around the gorge. If we had wanted to be mainly in Bath and Bristol then we could probably have found somewhere else that was easier.

An excellent cottage in a beautiful setting & particularly dog friendly with substantial on site exercise options. A distinguishing feature of this property was that EVERYTHING was provided on arrival for our convenience from loo rolls & soap in all wash areas to poo bags, dog treats etc plus some wine & chocs for the adults. Very welcoming & very friendly hosts. The presence of alpacas was also very special.

Located on a farm very close to Cheddar Gorge. The owners are warm and friendly and the cottage was worth every penny. Somerset is a wonderful county with so much to see and well worth a visit.
