Description

A pretty thatched cottage with characterful beams nestling by the village green, just 3 miles from Wallingford.

Little Thatchings is a classic South Oxfordshire thatched cottage with an open fire snuggled into an inglenook fireplace and a cosy snug with a welcoming wood burner. The cottage is nestled in its own garden with secret seating areas and a small orchard, just off the village green. It has been delightfully furnished in ‘Arts and Crafts’ style and has a wealth of original beams (some of which are low) - with some originating from ships of the Spanish Armada which were broken up at The Wharf just down the road. Surrounded by beautiful walks, this detached holiday cottage is a short distance from the River Thames and thatched village pub from which to watch the cricket on the green. This village is famous as a filming location for ‘Midsomer Murders’ and is a wonderful base from which to explore Oxford, Blenheim Palace, Henley, Windsor, Stratford, The Cotswolds, or even London. There are numerous gastro pubs and restaurants in the surrounding villages and small towns. Wallingford, 3 miles away, has a market, a farmers market, large supermarket, antique shops and restaurants. Or take a walk from your own front door down the old Roman road and across the water meadows to Dorchester Abbey which hosts a fine season of classical music. For small children there are two village playgrounds and the green provides a large area for ball games. Shop and pub 300 yards.

Lovely cottage but clearly run down and not very clean with cobwebs and the place only been superficially cleaned . Hardly slept at all as a small creature had made its way through the thatched roof and grinding away trying to get inside the house through the ceiling. Also they need to sort the lighting out hardly any lights and those that were there it was very dim -could hardly see at night Wouldn’t stay there again. All in all give this one a miss !

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We were most concerned and surprised to find this review. The same Guests had told the Agency how lovely the cottage was. However, as we take all comments very seriously, we contacted the next Guests in the cottage immediately. They assured us that they had heard no scrabbling and that the cottage was extremely clean. They loved the wet room and had had a lovely stay. We have also asked our cleaning firm to do some extra deep cleaning to the tops of curtains, lights and beams. The cottage is medieval with lighting that is as discreet as possible. It can be darker than the average modern house but for most Guests this is what they expect when they stay in a six hundred year old thatched cottage. We encourage all Guests to contact us immediately if there is anything unsatisfactory with the cottage so that we can remedy it if it is within our power to do so. Our telephone number is given out to people. The majority of our Guests appreciate the opportunity to stay in a unique and ancient property that has not been ruined by modern alterations and we were sad to hear that these particular Guests did not have a happy stay.

It is a nice house. Not suitable for tall people or very little children. Beautiful garden. Perfect location. House very dark inside.

very small and dark.TV room very small. Garden great but BBQ and furniture needs replacing. Low door to tv room = 6 bumps to head. Bedrooms good, show and wet room good but very dark lighting over all. Parking for average size car impossible hence having to park in neighbours parking area. overall ok but a bit disappointed at the cost. Had a good week visiting places in the area and visiting local famous pubs such as 6 bells with fantastic food menu.
