Although in general terms the cottage appeared ok, on closer looking we found that the fan oven did not work, the fridge and freezer had not been cleaned, some of the cupboard shelves had not been cleaned and were badly stained and before use required cleaning. By the Wednesday of our holiday the freezer had ceased to work, but the owner had bought a new cooker and had it installed the day before. Most of the doors were ill fitting and could not be fully closed.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We were disappointed to read your comments following your recent stay at Oak Cottage. As soon as you came to me with the complaint which was on the Friday night, I offered you the opportunity to leave with a full refund which you declined. I had an electrician come out that evening but unfortunately he could not fix the oven, I had a new cooker in and working on the Tuesday. As there were only two of you, you did still have the top oven to cook with until then. As with the cleanliness, my cleaner did come back in and clean through the kitchen again. At the end of the day we cannot keep everybody happy but I do try, but I am pleased it did not deter you from staying the full week that you had booked.

We enjoyed our stay. The cottage was well equipped and in a beautiful spot. Could be improved with the owners being a little friendlier. It's worth noting that the over bath shower is hand held and there is no shower curtain.

The holiday was a great success very much helped by the friendly owners who looked after us well if we had a need. The shops were a little distance away so it was lovely to have fresh milk & eggs from the farm. These along with the delicious iced cream made on the premises were a real boon. Before going to stay we read some less than favourable reviews about the property but all the linen was snow white and the rest of the place was spotless. Internet intermittent but the area has so much to do we didn't miss it, in fact there was a positive element to being unavailable. If you want a really great eating experience the Swan at Bampton is well worth a visit. Having the river a short walk away more than made up for the sea being a bit further distant.

On the surface the cottage was lovely but, once we were unpacked and in, we found a few things that needed improving! None of the doors fitted the frames without slamming them shut, the furniture sank down at the back, the kitchen (and other areas) wasn't as clean as it could/should have been, one of the curtain poles fell down on the first day and, after 2 days, the owner did come and replaster the wall but never came back to put the pole up! There was no instructions for the washer/dryer and, through trial and error, we finally got it to work - although we nearly cooked our clothes in the tumble! The roads in and out are more than rural and, after days of rain, we managed to smash our car trying to get back one night. On the plus, wifi was good although phone signal was non existent!
