Description

Nestled in the heart of the Périgord, this sunny cottage is perect for exploring this beautiful region.

These charming, traditional stone cottages are situated on the edge of a quiet hamlet, in pretty gardens that include a large terraced swimming pool with views across a wooded valley. The beautiful countryside around the cottages is dotted with walnut groves and fields of maize and sunflowers. Very close by is the historic village of Hautefort, 3km, has shops, restaurants, museum, imposing château and attractive Coucou leisure lake. This is the heart of the area known as the Périgord and offers a wealth of attractions. The historic riverside town of Montignac, 23km, with shops, restaurants and canoe hire, the medieval market town of Sarlat, 48km, La Roque-Gageac and the city of Périgueux, 59km, are all within an easy drive. Sharing a large south-facing swimming pool, the two holiday cottages offer comfortable accommodation, each with its own sitting-out area and barbecue offering a degree of privacy. Le Bosquet is a pretty detached cottage with a private garden, whilst La Bergerie adjoins the discreet owner’s home and benefits from a covered terrace.

First impression is of French shabby chic, but after a while you see it's a little neglected. Upstairs is charming, with low beams and wonderful views but the bathroom is very cramped and the shower is little more than a dribble (though a new, clean shower head would probably improve things). Downstairs is very atmospheric, with large furniture and many pieces of artwork and ceramics created by the owner. The "sofa" is, I think, a single sleigh bed covered with purpose made firm cushions, but it's impossible to sit and watch (English) TV unless you lie on it. There are only two other seats in the lounge - one an antique carver dining chair and the other a low level Ikea rattan chair. Not particularly comfy or practical when you are 60 something and 70 something. The kitchen/diner is well equipped but dresser and cupboard doors kept dropping off. Outside, the garden is overgrown in a kind of charming way, also peppered with pieces of artwork. Owners have a dog and a cat, too, which can find their way into the cottage. The pool area is large with wonderful views, and is shared with a one-bed holiday cottage adjoining the owners' home. If the weather isn't kind you'll have to drive a long way to find anywhere of interest, as this is VERY remote. Be prepared to take your own bedding and towels (these can also be rented) and you'll be charged a fixed price of €3 a day for gas, electric and water.
