Description

Within the historic Leahurst Estate this large, immaculate property is the perfect venue for a special gathering of friends or family.

Lamp Cottage is an immaculate stone detached holiday property set in parkland where sheep and deer roam and is located in the grounds of the historic Leahurst Estate, the former summer residence of Florence Nightingale and her family. It is approached down a private driveway through a meadow and a gate leading to a gravelled parking area. A large oak porch leads into this delightful accommodation where furnishings and fittings are of the a highest quality and spectacular unspoiled south west facing views across the Amber Valley make this the most unique of properties. The property is entered into via a large entrance hall, off which are the main reception rooms. To the rear of the hall, through double glazed doors, is the fully equipped kitchen which is open to the south facing conservatory style dining area that has some occasional seating and fold back glazed doors opening onto a large wrap around patio. A large teak table and chairs, a custom steel barbecue and a well-stocked herb garden cater for any alfresco dining requirements, in addition to sun loungers, spacious lawns and stunning views. The living room, situated at the rear with comfy seating and doors opening onto patio and lawn, features a wall-mounted wood-burning stove creating a truly relaxing atmosphere. There is a further study/TV room with board games and seating and a cloakroom. The stairs lead to the open gallery landing giving access to the bedrooms. Gardens and meadowland surround the property and there are also footpaths from the doorstep. Within a mile of the property is the World Heritage site that houses the world’s first water-powered cotton spinning factories and just under 4 miles is the delightful town of Matlock Bath boasting smart riverside cafés and bars. Slotted in between are more traditional pubs, restaurants, tea shops and ice cream parlours. Here visitors can experience a cable car ride up the dramatic face of the gorge The Heights of Abraham and admire the views of ‘Little Switzerland’ as Byron once described this area. Shop and pub ¼ mile.

We have stayed at this accommodation four times now and have enjoyed each and every visit. We visit all the local areas when we stay and find the property spacious, clean, warm, and very comfortable. It is in a very quiet location where you can relax. On this visit we were blessed by the properties local peacock who visited each day. What a wonderful sight !! We hope to return again in the future.

The house was a delight and a great base for us to explore this delightful area of the country we didn't know. We were fortunate with the excellent weather, but this led to the only major issue with the property. There is a lovely sized garden, mostly laid to lawn, that is full of wickedly sharp thistles. There were two children aged 4 and 6 in our party who love to run around in the garden in bare feet. This was impossible whilst we were there and was a frustration as it is such an easily solvable issue.

This was our second stay at Lamp Cottage and yes we have booked again for next year. We absolutely love this cottage, there is so much space for everyone to spread out yet be together. Everything is pristine and very well equipped. The beds are so comfy and we all had too many "lie ins" after all the fresh air and soft pillows. Apart from the stylishly decorated interior, the locations and views of this property are amazing. There are walks on your door step and we highly recommend the local butchers on the main road. If you look on their website there is a list of all the products they offer and they will take an order over the phone prior to your stay (handy if you plan on having a BBQ they do delicious burgers and sausages etc). We love the chip shop in Crich Village they are so friendly and the Nisa shop is well stocked and reasonable too. We ate out at the Jug and Glass in Lea and ThenTavern in Tansley highly recommend both places. Chatsworth was as stunning as ever and we enjoyed our usual haunts (Bakewell, Cromford, Crich Tram Museum, Matlock). If you have time do recommend visiting Buxton the journey over there itself was spectacular taking in the rolling hills and you can see for miles (take the A5012 then A515 via Cromford). The Pavillion Gardens were lovely and had a nice meal there too. There is so much to do in Derbyshire we look forward to returning in May 2018. Thank you The Rogers and Jones Family Kettering/Mansfield

Overall we had a wonderful week at Lamp Cottage. Clean, spacious, well equipped, beautiful location. A few niggles regarding the house (not enough lamps (odd considering the name!), blown bulbs on arrival, no kindling, faulty plugs, taps and loo roll holders. Nothing major and certainly nothing to detract from a lovely house and fabulous holiday. Lots to see and do in the area with friendly local people.

Great Cottage, well specified and a good basis for getting around this side of the Peak District. The actual location is a classic Hamlet typical for the area with only one shop - a good local butcher. Some good local walking, and it's close to the canal which was nice. The cottage was basically just as the photos suggest.
