Fishing lakes and children’s play area

Lower Aylescott Cottages (refs 29396, 29490, 29491, 29607, 30032 and UKC162) are located just outside the village of West Down, in the stunning North Devon countryside. The cottages are ideal for couples and smaller parties during the quieter months and are well suited for families during the school holidays. The extensive well-maintained grounds benefit from two fishing lakes and a children’s play area. There are walks around the grounds as well as some local footpaths. Lower Aylescott Cottages are all well-equipped and furnished to a good standard. The nearby village has a pub and local shop. The properties are very well-located to explore all North Devon has to offer. The renowned beach at Woolacombe is a short distance away, as well as the famous surfing beach at Croyde. For something a bit more rugged, head out to Crow Point and the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The nearest large town is the seaside resort of Ilfracombe. Enjoy an ice cream down at the harbour and see the Damian Hirst sculpture at the harbour entrance called Verity. There is also the Tunnels Beach and the Landmark Theatre, as well as a good range of shops and restaurants. Other local places of interest include Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and the Lynton to Lynmouth funicular railway, which all make for a good day out. Exmoor is a short distance away and on a clear day the views can be spectacular. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knightshayes, and the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Great Torrington. On site fishing is available. Shop and pub 1 mile.

Fantastic week spent here with my wife and my in laws. Great location, about 5 miles from the coastal towns of Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. Last couple of hundred yards to the cottage are a little narrow, but once you know them, you'll be fine. One can walk to the local shop, it's about a mile, but takes 15 minutes. Just the first bit hurts, as it's steep! Bungalow was situated on to top of the hill, overlooking the main lake and the play fields. Short walk down to the lakes, approx. 50 yards. Both lakes held fish, although catching the larger carp was challenging. Mainly due to the fact that the lakes are extremely well stocked with small roach, dace and bream. Fished at least once every, and always catching plenty of smaller fish. Managed one carp of around 10lb. There are bigger ones in there, as you can see them. But getting past the small ones and coaxing the bigger ones out of the lily pads proved a test! Lakes may benefit by reducing some of the smaller stock, and adding a few more carp and tench to 3lb. Just a thought. All rooms were well laid out, and had more than satisfactory furnishings. Separate bathroom to serve the two rooms on one side is excellent. En-suite served the master bedroom. Kitchen and dining area was again, more than adequate. The cottage was clean and tidy on arrival. Owners more than helpful. Couldn't think of anything that would be needed that isn't already there. Patio area over looked the lakes. Sat outside on a few occasions, although the weather wasn't best suited to outside eating. It was nice to watch the buzzard at work, martialling his patch. The deer's also made several appearances behind the lake. Plenty of wild birds too. Not sure if a bird table feeding area would enhance the scene. Or if it would increase pigeons??? One area that would benefit from a slight improvement would be the patio equipment. Although we only spent short times on the aluminium seats, they are not the comfiest! Plus this cottage was for 6. So a larger single table, with chairs would be more suitable. That's about the only "fault" I could find. All in all, an excellent holiday in an excellent setting. I'd certainly go again, as would the in-laws.

The family who look after the properties were more than supportive!! Cottage was set in an amazing location and a short drive from sooo many lovely places. There are a number of steps down to the lake view cottage so you just need to bear that in mind.

Very clean, practicable cottage. Has everything you need, but furniture basic. Good value for the price. Lovely location. Have to carry luggage down lots of steps. Lovely play area, but not safely fenced off from the stream.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday at Lake View and thank you for your review. Regarding your comment on the fencing by the play area, every effort has been made to ensure that the small stream and lakes are safely fenced. Guests are warned at every stage that there is a water presence at the site and that young and small children must be supervised by their parent/ guardian. The play area is some distance from the cottage and whilst you are encouraged to enjoy the facility, the overall safety of children is still the parent/ guardian responsibility.

Excellent cottage layout with Master bedroom separate side of cottage from bathroom and other bedrooms. Lovely outlook. On-suite lacks hanging hooks and storage/shelves for bathroom essentials. Mattress in Master bedroom very cheap and uncomfortable. Was soaking wet on our first night - cleaning problem? Main problem was that the weather was wet and cool and the central heating had been isolated off so we had to have the oven on to warm the place. The car park area is quite muddy and when wet gets your shoes mucky. Young owners are pleasant but could do with checking daily if guests are OK or there are any issues to be addressed. Narrow lanes which if access to West Down from the cottage is blocked can be quite harrowing for some drivers. All that said in better weather and with a little improvement the stay would be fine.
