La Grande Pouliniere has the potential to be a top-rated gîte. It's in a fantastic location and is set in splendid grounds. The owners have clearly spent a lot of money on the place in the past installing new windows, a good quality kitchen, modern bathrooms and the outdoor hot-tub sized pool. The provision of toiletries was also a nice touch. However, for whatever reasons, it now seems the general upkeep of the house is lacking. Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was the absence of the usual visitor's information folder that is always present in these holiday gîtes which gives the numbers of local doctors, dentists, hospitals, local amenities, general local information etc. There were also no instructions on how to work the heating which we did manage to figure out for ourselves in the end, for the radiators at least. Unfortunately the combi-boiler only provided intermittent hot water at best, no matter what we tried. Again, this may have been down to us not having it on the correct setting, which is another reason to leave clear instructions for guests. Trying to figure out what to do with the rubbish based on what little information there was provided was frustrating to say the least. The only information provided was that non-recyclable rubbish and food waste is collected on a Thursday from the property. Turned out this was not the case (it was collected on Friday and not directly from the property as stated). It also appears you have to put the rubbish in special bags which you get from the what must be the local "town hall" (something I feel should have been provided by the owners). There was also no instructions on what to do with any rubbish you accumulated between collection day and when you check out. Most of the Ikea cups and mugs in the cupboards had chipped rims which made them quite dangerous to drink out of without risking cut lips. These are not expensive items so I simply do not understand why the owners feel its ok to not replace them when they become damaged. Likewise the coffee maker didn't work and both the vacuum cleaners in the cupboard were faulty (e.g. the main handle/shaft kept falling off the upright cleaner while in use). We did not use the "sun lounge" as it appeared that its main use in the past has been somewhere for pets to sleep. All the chair covers where stained and covered in pet hair. We did try to call both the contact numbers provided in the booking confirmation at the start of our holiday to report some of these problems but could not get through to anyone. As I have already said this place has fantastic potential and has some lovely touches both inside and out. Sadly though, it's let down by the apparent lack of care and attention to its upkeep.

The photo on the web site is not a good one it shows the cottage as an old one in fact the wisteria is overgrown and makes the cottage inside very dark. There was no information about the area etc. No doctors or dentist restaurants no instruction on how anything works in the cottage, the garden is very overgrown. The price is very overinflated for something right out in the sticks.
