Surrounded by the rolling wooded countryside of the Périgord Noir, this old stone cottage stands in large, lawned gardens with a private swimming pool, and lovely views of the Château of Fleurac. Beautifully restored and decorated, it makes a peaceful haven with all modern amenities, including under-floor heating and a terrace for outdoor meals. Nearby Rouffignac offers shops and restaurants, and Les Eyzies has lively markets with local farm products. The area is famous for prehistoric sites, with the caves at Les Eyzies, and the Lascaux Cave paintings, just two of the fascinating visits to make. The lakes of Tamnies and Fossemagne with their beaches are a short drive, and the valley of La Vézère is the place for canoeing. Also close by is historic Sarlat, with its many cultural events. An ideal holiday base.

Gite F24205 La Cle Des Champs The good points • A very attractive gite in an excellent location, central to many of the tourist attractions in the Dordogne. • Quietly situated at the end of a lane and not overlooked. • Large, attractive, well-cared for garden. • Large south facing terrace with a well-cared for pool. • Cooker and kitchen electrical equipment in good working order. The not so good • On arrival we were told that the upstairs shower was not working. Despite the language problem we made it clear that one of the primary reasons we had booked the gite was it having two shower rooms. We were told that we should share the en suite downstairs shower. We were emphatic that it was not appropriate for one couple to share by needing to pass through the others bedroom and insisted that it should be attended to immediately. The owner then went upstairs and removed the notice saying that the shower was not in use and told us to use it. It transpired that if the doors were not closed carefully they leaked. We used the shower for two weeks and not one spot of water leaked through. We have subsequently read past reviews of the property and this has been a problem from prior 2013 and has not been addressed. The doors should be repaired so that they close correctly each time or the gite advertised as having one shower and the price adjusted downwards accordingly. • The TV has no English channels and no DVD player. • Four of six bulbs not working in the lounge. Two of four in the outside eating area not working. One of four spots in the kitchen not working. One of two on the landing not working. One in the upstairs bathroom not working. One in the second upstairs bedroom not working. • No storage space in the kitchen, other than on work surfaces, for food. • No lids for any saucepans. • No storage space for clothes. The wardrobe in the upstairs bedroom is narrower than a hanger so the door will not close. If you did use it, the door is such a poor fit that you need to flex the door to open it, risking the large mirror on it shattering. An accident waiting to happen. In the second upstairs bedroom what looks like a wardrobe is in fact a cupboard with shelves filled with bedding. • Two of the four sun loungers are wooden, very old, rotten and falling apart. The pads for them are badly ripped. • Extraction in downstairs toilet and shower not working. With a small financial outlay, by the owner, to correct what are easily correctable problems this could be one of the nicest gite you have ever visited.

This cottage is not as described by the owner. There is no plunge pool at the property, it is in the owners home, and we were not even offered the use of it. The owner says it costs 300 euros per week for it in winter, so should refund this amount per week for not having it in summer. Furnished with very tired carboot sale type chairs etc. Cusions provided instead of pillows. Pool unfenced and full of algea following warm weather.
