It is very rare, in my experience, to find a villa or a hotel, where the photographs tell the truth. Here, the photographs made the place seem idyllic and that is exactly what it was. We adored this villa and want to go back next year. There are two qualifications we would make and this should not be seen as a detraction from this 10 Star review. First, and this may have been my fault, I had gained the impression that there might be a cafe or a restaurant in easy walking distance; there is not. Second, and again this was made entirely obvious from the outset, there is no internet connection. Because we had been let down by another 'supplier,' we had to book this property at very short notice. That is why we took it, even though there was no internet connection. Because of the nature of my work, no internet is a real problem. For some people , it would be an insuperable problem. It tells you everything you need to know about this property that despite that I would still go back there again. I just wish the internet had been available and I think some people would not book this property , just because of that.

Overall the cottage was great, our only caveat is that it advertises as a heated pool, the owners said the heating was on but the pool remained at 22 C, occasionally rising to 23 C, realistically or not we had expected it to be warmer.

La Charlotine is a stunning property hidden down a quiet country lane in the heart of the beautiful Dordogne countryside. Inside, the house is immaculately presented with an open plan kitchen, dining and living area and a pretty stone cobbled floor. The kitchen itself is small but perfectly formed and very well equipped with everything you need to take advantage of all the produce you’ll buy at the local markets. The bedrooms are well sized with more than enough storage space and the beds themselves are comfortable if perhaps a little soft for our taste. Outside you feel truly isolated from the rest of the world; the property is set in huge grounds with fruit trees dotted about and more than enough space for an impromptu game of football. The area around the pool was our favourite; the poolside outdoor room has a BBQ and a big dining table where we ate all our evening meals. There is also a seating area with a small table for relaxing with a cool drink during the heat of the day or for playing games around at the end of the day. There are also fantastic hammocks where you while away the hours. The pool itself is a brilliant size for either just cooling off or putting in some lengths. Balls, floats, badminton and other games equipment are all provided in the poolside basement room which also houses a small kitchen area with a fridge for keeping the wine chilled and a shower room and WC. At night the lack of light pollution that the location gives you means that the Milky Way is a fantastic sight. We came to the Dordogne because there is so much to do and see, from caves to canoes and castles to chateaus and La Charlotine is well positioned to get to everything really easily – the only problem was we found it very difficult to tear ourselves away from the house! There are two reasons that the location doesn’t get a ten. Firstly there is not really a good Supermarket close by. The one in Rouffignac is only 10 minutes away and is OK but doesn’t have a great selection and is a bit pricier than the big supermarket in Montignac which is a 30 - 40 minute drive. Secondly the house sits at the top of a hill, which is great for the views but means that wherever you cycle you always have a big climb to get home!
