A unique house in a fabulous historic setting at the foot of Edinburgh Castle, this unusual wedge shaped house is built onto the wall around St Cuthbert’s church, moments walk from Princes Street gardens. Formerly a school house and then the watchkeeper’s cottage, it is furnished in a dramatic, appropriately Gothic style, and only 270 yards from the West End. It is hard to imagine any more central a location. Restaurants, galleries, historic buildings and a Saturday farmer’s market are a few minutes’ walk. Shops 250 yards.

Double bedroom with 5ft bed. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. First floor: Living/dining room. Galley-style kitchen.

We stayed at this quaint manor in the graveyard for our honeymoon last year and I decided to surprise my wife with a long weekend stay to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. Having arrived after a long drive from Peterborough, we were pleased to be back and it was good to see my previous comments and issues had been acted on. It was also nice to see that the kitchen had been updated with a new hob, oven, toaster, microwave etc. If you stay at this property please ensure you turn the downstairs lights on before going down, unfortunately my wife had a fall on the first night and at the time we thought she may have broken her ankle, although it later proved to be a severe sprain. Not to be deterred, she soldiered on best she could with the aid of a stick. The only issue we had was the fact that the internet was down and going by the visitors book, it had been for some months! No NETFLIX available because of no net and this was to save us purchasing films locally as we had seen all the DVD's previously. Not sure if it had been reported, but being the weekend. There was nothing we could do to get it fixed for our stay, as we were only there for a long weekend. At my own expense I changed the ADSL filter, but this did not fix the issue. Due to there being no TV reception which we already knew about and no internet, we decided to cut the holiday short as my wife was unable to get about because she was to immobile. Accidents happen and we were disappointed to leave early, not to mention the money spent on the venture seemingly down the drain. It may have been our 1st wedding anniversary and a testing time, but these things are sent to try us! However do not be deterred from booking this property, if we can find funds..... we will be back!

Great spot, just underneath the castle and 2 minutes walk through Princes Street Gardens to Princes Street. They've really embraced the gothic surroundings - gloriously ott decor in the sitting room. Easy parking - but would be easier to find the entrance if you just said opposite the Kings Stables car park! Comfortable and cosy. We know Edinburgh well and thought it was looking a bit tired - the Royal Mile is just a tourist trap and lots of people sleeping on the streets in the centre. Had a lovely lunch at Cafe Marlayne in Thistle Street.

Kings Stables is a wonderfully unusual property in an excellent location. We loved it's quirky shape and the gothic edge that it gains from both its design and its proximity to such an interesting graveyard, not to mention Edinburgh Castle looking down from above. The house is perfectly situated to enable guests to walk straight into the heart of the city and our car was totally redundant for the entire duration of our stay. Apart from being unable to successfully use the wifi (no bad thing when you're on your honeymoon), the only disappointments were that the bathroom was a bit on the shabby side and the bed, whilst looking suitably gothic, had a mattress and bedding that seriously let it down. Just a small investment in making the bed more comfortable and attractive, would really transform Kings Stables. That said, we loved our stay and were loathe to leave.

This was our second stay at the cottage and we enjoyed our stay just as much as we did the first time, location is excellent to explore the surrounding area.
