A very warm welcome from the owner. The peace and solitude we were looking for.

We are a family of 5, with 3 kids ages 4, 5 & 7. The two bedrooms in the cottage, one with a double bed and one with a double and single bed, were perfect for us. Both were well fitted out with plenty of storage space and both had lovely views over the bay. Downstairs the kitchen had all required appliances and even though the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer were on most nights they were very economical when it came to paying the electricity bill. There was a cosy dining room and lovely lounge were we spent most evenings wrapped up in front of the fire playing games or watching a movies. Michael was a great host and gave us a full walk through of the house. When we had a problem with the DVD he immediately arranged to come up and fix it and when he couldn't he replaced it within minutes. He gave us hints and tips of where to go and what was going on in the area. The location is how this cottage stands above any other. It sits on its own overlooking Derrynane bay, there is a large garden with a little stream and waterfall which the kids loved. We BBQ'd every other night and although it got a little chilly some nights my husband never tired of cooking outside where he had the most amazing view to enjoy. The area is also part of the Dark Night Sky reserve and on one clear night around 11pm we wrapped the kids up and sat outside for hours watching the shooting stars go by and the moonlight over Derrynane and Kenmare bay, it was amazing and a memory I will treasure for ever. Derrynane Bay and House are only 5mins drive away and if you are travelling with young children I'd highly recommend the Pirate camp with Derrynane Sports and the fairy garden in Derrynane House. If you are active the Mass Path 6km walk is a must and brings you on a nice adventure along they coast line and then up into the hills for some fantastic views. Also check out the Wild Atlantic Music Experience in Caherdaniel hall. The Blind Piper was great for food and catered well for children, the kids loved their playground. We also enjoyed day trips to Valentia Island and Kells Bay house and gardens. This was our second holiday in Derrynane and it was hard to say goodbye, we will definitely be back again.

We did not enjoy this cottage at all. There was a strong bad smell inside, in all the rooms. On most of the windows in the house, the latch to open and close the windows were broken. The springs on the mattresses were uncomfortable to sleep on, and we all commented on it. Not to mention the old blue bathroom suite. Why was that not shown in the photos? Most of all, it was dark, bleak cold and dreary. I have being going to this part of the country for many years, and I have stayed in some lovely places. The area around Caherdaniel and Derrynane is stunningly beautiful, and we were lucky with the weather, but we just couldn't stay in this cottage for the whole week, so we left it 3 days early. I'm gutted that our holiday this year which we looked forward to so much, was such a disappointment and waste of money.

The cottage is not luxurious but adequate, comfortable and excellent value for money. Superb location with stunning views over Derrynane. Michael, the owner was accommodating and cooperative and has many a tale to tell, as long as you're not a hurry. We had a lovely week.
