Description

A comfortable holiday home, close to Bishop Auckland and within easy driving of Raby Castle, and Barnard Castle.

This semi-detached holiday home, accessed by an unmade road, is situated in Evenwood, a former coal mining village, and makes a good base for walkers and cyclists. Take a trip to Raby Castle, with its panoramic views and herds of deer, or visit Durham Cathedral, a short drive away. Bishop Auckland has a splendid marble and limestone chapel and stained-glass windows that relate to stories of early Christian saints. Barnard Castle, 15 miles, has shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. Additional on road parking for 1 car. Shop and pub 200 yards, restaurant 1 mile.

The property is situated only a short drive from Bishop Auckland which plays host to the magical Kynren Eleven Arches spectacular from July-September 2016. Kynren - an epic tale of England - promises to be a historical extravaganza with a cast of over 1,000 people set over 7.5 acres of County Durham. There’ll be 14 action packed and movie-like performances of colossal and dazzling proportions. The shows will incorporate a full size lake with pyrotechnics, stunning lighting and water effects making it a true spectacle in every sense of the word!

Ground floor: Living/dining room. Kitchen with tiled floor. First floor: 3 bedrooms: 2 double, 1 bunk. Bathroom with shower over bath, shower attachment and toilet.

Gas coal-effect fire in living room included. Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. DVD. Stereo/CD. iPod dock. Electric cooker. Combi microwave/oven/grill. Pictures very deceiving. Garden across the lane. Large housing estate to the side of the property. Not peaceful at all. Would not recommend this property to anybody looking for a picturesque peaceful location. More like a rental property than a holiday cottage. Stairs very steep. Not worth the money. Only plus is the interior is well decorated with all you need. Will not be returning ever. Went home early very disappointed.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am sorry you had a disappointing stay at Hope Cottage. I don’t believe the pictures are deceiving; the garden is across the lane which is very common in this part of the country and it shows a view across the village green. As the cottage is part of a village there are other properties in the area but it is not an isolated location and not described as such. The stairs are fairly steep but this is an old stone miner’s cottage dating back over 100 years.

Stayed here several times - well equipped, easy to get to and a quiet location. It's even better now it's got WiFi

This is a beautifully fitted and furnished terraced cottage on the edge of the North Pennines. The complimentary bottle of wine was a particularly nice touch. I think this property is used by its owners some of the time, so the standard of the property reflects this, and rented out at other times. My only concern was the directions to find it, which were quite long and complicated but did not actually help; I had to ask local people for directions. All it needed was 'Follow signs to Evenwood from neighbouring trunk roads, the A68 or A688. If you arrive from the east (from the direction of Bishop Auckland) turn right at the T-junction beside the village green, then left almost immediately onto a cinder track along the edge of the green. The property is part of the terrace facing the green at ts far end, near its corner.', with corresponding instructions for people arriving from other directions.

Pleasant stay in comfortable and well equipped cottage. Took a couple of nights for me to get used to the very firm bed! Would stay again and recommend. One suggestion would be to have a more comprehensive house manual, with practical details and recommendations of restaurants and places to go. Overall a good value base which was well equipped and spotlessly clean.
