Description

Enjoy many family attractions and activities from this spacious Devon longhouse which exudes period charm.

This 300-year-old, granite, thatched Devon longhouse lies detached in a timeless hamlet in the Dartmoor National Park, 3 miles from Moretonhampstead, surrounded by ancient woodland and rolling hills. To the front is a large, south-facing lawned garden with table and chairs - a wonderful place for stargazing at night - enclosed by a sturdy stone wall displaying long-unused bee boles. The property has many original features and a wood-burning stove, but has also been updated for today’s lifestyle; it is spacious and is in an ideal location for families and friends to get together for a holiday or a celebration. Moretonhampstead is a friendly, busy, ‘gateway-to-Dartmoor’ village with shops, good food pubs, church and an outdoor swimming pool; heath-topped and surrounded by hills, it has good walks locally and has reservoir/river fishing close by. Its fascinating history goes back over 1000 years to Saxon times. In addition to having many of its own attractions, it is the ideal base to explore some of Britain’s most spectacular and beautiful countryside including moorland and the coast. For the active, Moretonhampstead boasts what many find to be a surprising range of sporting facilities and the great expanse of Dartmoor presents any rambler with unlimited options. No part of the National Park is more than a one hour’s drive away and most of the well-known beauty spots are considerably less. For those with other interests, there is the historic naval city of Plymouth, Devon’s Roman capital; Exeter with its magnificent cathedral; the many famous coastal resorts including Torbay, and the serene countryside of North Devon - all accessible within an hour. Set alongside the River Teign on the western edge of Dartmoor, Dunsford Nature Reserve offers wildlife and scenery so rich and varied that you will want to visit many times, and in every season. Admire the large areas of oak woodland glades, bracken-covered valley slopes, exposed rocky outcrops and the River Teign, which supports an abundance of wildlife from butterfly to bluebells, fallow deer to pied flycatchers. Golf at Bovey Castle is 2 miles, the popular Miniature Pony Centre is 2½ miles, Chagford is 5 miles and Exeter, 13 miles, Whatever the time of year, Moretonhampstead has something to offer! Shop 3½ miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

listed as 5 star. It is not 5 star. The building is lovely, the location idyllic , the fittings are substandard for 5 star but the beds were comfy. We have stayed in many 5 star properties and even 4 stars which have been better than this and they have all provided everything we would need right down to the smallest detail like salt and pepper in the larder. After a 9 hour drive we arrived to find we could not even make ourselves a refreshing cup of tea as there were no supplies at all. Unlike an owner last year who even left us a home made cake and a bottle of wine along with eggs bacon bread tea coffee and milk as well as larder basic like sugar salt and pepper. This owner could learn a thing or two about 5 star treatment. The cottage was not furnished as the pictures show. We were a party of eight adults which included two chefs. The kitchen was poorly supplied with pots pans crockery, cutlery and glasses. Barely one of each and mismatched. We had a birthday to celebrate that week and couldn't even set the table for a three course meal. The picture shows an aga and an electric oven. The aga is not there and the oven too small to cook for so many. The bedroom pictures show tv's and curtains. No tv no curtains only a blind which didn't work properly in our room because it was broken a poorly repaired. No curtains in the dining room. The bar area in the lounge was totally unequiped, not a glass or jug or ice bucket to be found. The garden which is wall enclosed is beautiful but the pictures show a table and 8 chairs but in reality there was a large pub bench, fine for eating outside but nowhere to sit and while away a lovely summers day. Luckily we had taken a couple of folding chairs for us older members of the group or we wouldn't have been able to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The bathrooms were lovely except for the bathroom on the landing which smell extremely bad. The bath in the attic bedroom had to be washed before use as it was dirty. There were many cobwebs around the house. Overall I would have to say this cottage is not 5 star. This the highest grade which cannot be improved upon so should be top class in all things, supply all things you could possibly need and have attention to detail. It did not.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am very sorry that you didn't enjoy the house when you stayed there. I have read your review and your comments and I am sorry that you were let down on certain aspects by us. We have since been to the house and looked into the issues you raised. The house has now been completely reviewed, restocked with the kitchen equipment it lacked, alongside a new welcome pack which as standard includes some tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper as well as items of seasonal produce. The photos that currently sit on the website are different to those advertised on our own. The only incorrect items displayed within the photos on the Cottages 4 You website are the curtains (as these have been replaced by blinds) and the Aga has since been removed. The Aga run using solid fuel and so had to be maintained by our guests - we felt this was unfair. We have emailed the current photos of The Farm to Cottages 4 You and these will be available to view on the website shortly. We always check the house before a group checks in and on this occasion we did not and have learnt a hard lesson we are so very sorry that it affected your week and that we didn't get the opportunity to rectify it at the time. We have had guests since your visit and their feedback has been positive. We live just down the road and are therefore on hand should there be any problems and we post all of our numbers in the kitchen and hope that guests call us should they need any assistance. It is a shame we were not contacted at the time, had we been we would have done our utmost to rectify things right away. We are glad you enjoyed the house generally and the location, and having addressed each point you raised carefully, we would love the opportunity to show you our improvements. We hope to see you again in the future.
