English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside and glorious wildlife, this delightful granite and slate barn enjoys the use of 2½ acres of woodland walks.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside and glorious wildlife, this typically Cornish, stone and slate barn was lovingly converted in 2009 to create a purpose-built holiday cottage with the emphasis on comfort, but at minimal cost to the environment. The cottage is approached via a private drive through the woods from a quiet country lane (no traffic noise!). Higher Clamland adjoins a second holiday cottage; both cottages have their own fenced gardens and separate parking for two cars. The cottage also has the use of 2½ acres of woodland - perfect for a morning stroll with (or without) the dogs.
Higher Clamland offers an ideal base for exploring Devon and Cornwall, being centrally located and only ½ an hour’s drive from either the rocky north coast or the sandy south coast. Boscastle, Tintagel, the small sandy cove of Trebarwith, and Crackington Haven are all within easy reach, as are Looe, Polperro and Seaton. Both Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are a short drive away, as well as a selection of magnificent National Trust properties (Cotehele being the nearest). The Eden Project is not far away, there is golf at nearby St Mellion, with smaller courses at Launceston, Holsworthy and Bude. Horse riding, fishing and, of course, walking and cycling, are all available locally. Launceston, the ancient capital of Cornwall is 10 minutes away, with its fine castle, steam railway, restaurants and shops. There is a wide selection of pubs offering excellent food within easy reach. Shop 3 miles, pub about 1 mile.

Open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove, French doors to seating area, vaulted ceiling and kitchen area. Two steps down to double bedroom with 5ft mahogany sleigh bed and TV. Bathroom with shower over double-ended bath and toilet. Slate floor throughout.

Higher Clamland is an absolute delight. Well appointed and spacious barn conversion, skilfully and thoughtfully done, we particularly liked the green specification and details plus the lovely large bed. Ideally located for our fun-packed week's itinerary, we particularly enjoyed a walk along the Golitha falls on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Thanks again for making us so welcome. Highly recommended.

We had a most enjoyable holiday at Higher Clamland, the cottage was tasty furnished and everything needed was available. A tasty bottle of Higher Clamland Apple Juice was waiting for us on arrival, very tasty. We were made most welcome and would definatley return.

A modern comfortable cottage coupe of miles down narrow lanes but well situated for Bodmin moor, Dartmoor, and south and north coasts. The only drawback is that the owners control the heating and have it on the same temp all the time. The weather was a bit chilly this May so we found it a bit cold. The owners did offer to turn it up if we wanted but then it would be too hot for sleeping. Also you could light the log fire but this made the thermostat on the radiators go off thus keeping the bedroom and bathroom cold. Most cottages that we have rented have this problem, it it quite frustrating unless you go in the summer when it is warm.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your positive comments which we appreciate. We are sorry you had an issue with the heating system, had you mentioned it while you were here it could have been easily dealt with. Both bathroom and bedroom radiators have thermostatic valves and can be turned off if required (for example if the bedroom is too hot). The main room temperature can be set to any desired temperature - we do have to do this ourselves as it involves making an adjustment to the digital boiler control panel and this necessitates some knowledge of the control system of the air source heat pump. We always say to visitors that we are very happy to make any necessary adjustments for their comfort, we do however need to be told that there is a problem in order that we can do this. We provide free logs, kindling and fire lighters for the woodburner, the central heating is more than adequate but many visitors enjoy (as we do) a log fire in spring and autumn.
