English Country Cottages

From a touch of luxury to characterful heritage, experience one of our truly inspiring holiday properties.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside and glorious wildlife, this delightful granite and slate barn enjoys the use of 2½ acres of woodland walks.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside and glorious wildlife, this typically Cornish, stone and slate barn was lovingly converted in 2009 to create a purpose-built holiday cottage with the emphasis on comfort, but at minimal cost to the environment. The cottage is approached via a private drive through the woods from a quiet country lane (no traffic noise!). Higher Clamland adjoins a second holiday cottage; both cottages have their own fenced gardens and separate parking for two cars. The cottage also has the use of 2½ acres of woodland - perfect for a morning stroll with (or without) the dogs.
Higher Clamland offers an ideal base for exploring Devon and Cornwall, being centrally located and only ½ an hour’s drive from either the rocky north coast or the sandy south coast. Boscastle, Tintagel, the small sandy cove of Trebarwith, and Crackington Haven are all within easy reach, as are Looe, Polperro and Seaton. Both Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are a short drive away, as well as a selection of magnificent National Trust properties (Cotehele being the nearest). The Eden Project is not far away, there is golf at nearby St Mellion, with smaller courses at Launceston, Holsworthy and Bude. Horse riding, fishing and, of course, walking and cycling, are all available locally. Launceston, the ancient capital of Cornwall is 10 minutes away, with its fine castle, steam railway, restaurants and shops. There is a wide selection of pubs offering excellent food within easy reach. Shop 3 miles, pub about 1 mile.

Open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove, French doors to seating area, vaulted ceiling and kitchen area. Two steps down to double bedroom with 5ft mahogany sleigh bed and TV. Bathroom with shower over double-ended bath and toilet. Slate floor throughout.

A modern comfortable cottage coupe of miles down narrow lanes but well situated for Bodmin moor, Dartmoor, and south and north coasts. The only drawback is that the owners control the heating and have it on the same temp all the time. The weather was a bit chilly this May so we found it a bit cold. The owners did offer to turn it up if we wanted but then it would be too hot for sleeping. Also you could light the log fire but this made the thermostat on the radiators go off thus keeping the bedroom and bathroom cold. Most cottages that we have rented have this problem, it it quite frustrating unless you go in the summer when it is warm.

The location is excellent - both peaceful and scenic. The owners are hospitable, friendly and helpful. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and unreservedly recommend Higher Clamland as an ideal base from which to explore both Cornwall and Devon.

The cottage was to a very high standard with a warm welcome from the owners on arrival. We had a peaceful and relaxing holiday as the cottage is in a perfect rural location. The cottage is close to local shops and amenities making it easy to eat out or stay in. Very well presented cottage with some luxuries. Great location for visiting other parts of Cornwall and Devon. Enjoyed every minute there and would love to stay again. Will recommend to family and friends. Loved how we could stay an environmentally friendly property.

Enjoyed a most tranquil stay at Higher Clamland, all we could hear were the birds singing. The cottage was the most well-equipped I have ever stayed in, I even found a sewing kit in a drawer! The kitchen has a washing machine (rotary line in the garden), an oven, fridge with freezer compartment and a microwave. A remarkably good converted barn giving that wonderful cottagey feel and the log burner made the evenings even more cosier. Steve & Mary are the most remarkable hosts providing an extensive collection of "things-to-do" brochures and keen to make sure you enjoy your stay and have everything you need. Their private woodland provides a pleasant walk if you don't feel like venturing out but need some fresh air. The Springer Spaniel pub (nearby) and their staff were very pleasant and dog-friendly, but if you prefer a huge plate of home-cooked food then we strongly recommend The Manor House at Callington, staff also helpful and very dog-friendly. We didn't want to go home!
