English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Lying on the edge of a golf course, this property is located a few hundred yards from the River Esk.

In an area of sparkling beauty, High Eskholme Cottage lies at the heart of Eskdale Estate which is set within the peaceful Eskdale Valley. It is a charming, detached, mullioned-windowed stone holiday cottage with a secluded garden on the edge of the pretty golf course and has been restored to offer all amenities whilst retaining the ‘cottage’ charm. The Estate is unique in having so much contained within one boundary - guests can enjoy the challenge of a professionally designed golf course, the wildness of the Muncaster Fell, the peace of the River Esk and the beauty of the woods, all within a few hundred yards of the front door. Golf is at a discounted fee and there are limited fishing permits for anglers. Ravenglass is about 2 miles, where the narrow gauge steam railway chugs its scenic route along Eskdale, and historic Muncaster Castle, which has lovely gardens and a renowned rare owl sanctuary, is about 1 mile. Shop about 3 miles, pub about 2 miles.

Living room with open fire and mullioned windows. Sitting room with sofa bed (for +2). Spacious fitted farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room with slate flagged floor. Utility. Sun porch. First floor: Double bedroom, en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Two twin bedrooms. Shower room with toilet.

It was a lovely cottage, very remote but lovely. Criticisms would be the fitted bed sheet in main bedroom clearly hadn’t been ironed but it looked clean thankfully. Integrated fridge would benefit an upgrade, was very small for cottage capacity and was worn with not all bits functioning (interior light not working, inside door shelf with no guard. Maybe add a larger fridge which would cater for a larger group. No spare bulbs for lamp in front lounge, nor spare batteries for the remotes (we had to replace them ourselves). WiFi service was shocking, worse than dial up it was said. All that aside it’s a lovely house and if improvements were made we wouldn’t hesitate returning.

The cottage itself was nice but having a car park outside the living room and bedroom windows was strange - particularly as the property was marketed as being quite rural. Muncaster Castle aside (which was great) there wasn't a huge amount to do for children that was within easy reach and we found the driving of the locals incredibly aggressive and at times dangerous. Overall, a bit of a disappointing family holiday given the price tag!

Cottage was beautiful in lovely setting. The directions to the property were fine until "all the way to the River Esk." Because of the distance involved we were convinced we had missed the turn off and were anxious about finding the cottage, especially when directions and road signs warned not to follow sat nav. When I stopped to enquire at a filling station I learned that it was another 25 miles. The directions could have been more explicit about the distance involved in this final leg of the journey.

Lovely spacious cottage, well equipped. Easy walks directly from the front door and a car drive for the more challenging mountains and fell walks.

The cottage was freezing when we arrived and the boiler had received some attention that morning. Because of this, the local rep made available a second property where the CH was working in case the CH in the property we rented failed again. The hot water stopped working on Saturday. Contact with the local rep is by mobile except there is no mobile coverage where she lives. This meant that we were only able to finalize arrangements for moving to Eskdale Lodge on the Monday morning, two cold showers later. High Eskholme is tired-looking and the kitchen needs to be replaced. The lighting was gloomy and there was a strong smell of burning oil when we arrived. The cupboards are loaded with crockery and glasses, so that you can't easily get what you want. I was not confident about the cleanliness of the kitchen, the utensils or the cupboards. The bathrooms were all clean. The fridge light was not working and the door did close properly on the freezer which had not been defrosted for months. The wifi signal was extremely weak and not much use if you needed to rely on it.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We have looked into the complaints made and can only apologise if we fell short of your expectations. We understand from our housekeeper that alternative accommodation was offered on the day of your arrival, but you did not decide to move until the Monday, which was your fourth day at Eskdale. With regard to the cupboards – this house sleeps eight people so we have to supply enough crockery etc. for this amount of guests. On inspection the freezer door shuts fine and is not overly frosted. Unfortunately, the mountains do tend to interfere with mobile and Wi-Fi signals, but this is beyond our control. We will now be providing an e-mail address for our housekeeper and hope this will help with the contact problem that has been brought to our attention. We usually have very good reviews, but your comments have been useful and we will adjust our contact details for new guests.
