Description

A peaceful location to enjoy the views, with walking and cycling and discovering this lovely part of Northumberland.

This delightful holiday home has been imaginatively converted from a barn building. Adjoining the owners’ home, Swallow’s Rest is peacefully situated, and surrounded by farmland with walking and cycling from the door. It enjoys splendid views down the Allen Valley towards Weardale and north to the Cheviot Hills. Whilst the location may seem a little remote, only 1½ miles away, lies the busy village of Allendale, with shops, pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and electric bike hire - a pleasant walk or a 5-minute drive. This beautiful, unspoilt part of the North Pennines is designated as an AONB. Hadrian’s Wall, Keilder Water, and both the Northumberland and Lake District National Parks, and the glorious heritage coastline are a scenic drive away. Enjoy stargazing in the internationally acclaimed Dark Sky Park. Newcastle, Durham and Carlisle are within easy reach. The historic market towns of Hexham and Alston are nearby. Our stay at Swallow's Rest was great! We had a lovely time and the cottage was so comfortable and had everything we needed to make it a great stay. The owner Barry was very helpful and the area was stunning.

Lovely place to stay. The beds were amazing - huge and very comfortable. We could have done with another set of cutlery (this is very common in holiday cottages we have found) and if the dishwasher had been a bit bigger we would have only had to put it on once a day instead of after every meal. But a lovely well thought out cottage apart from that. One small niggle about the garden. The details stated there was an enclosed grass area however when we got there not only was the grass all now knee high but under no circumstances could it be described as enclosed. It took us more than 24 hours to see the decking and basically it was unusable as a garden area. A big shame as it would have been nice to sit outside and let the dogs wander around.

Excellent clean and bright. All mod cons. Hosts Barry and Elaine very friendly and accommodating. Love the area, love Allendale, Catton and Whitfield and of course Hexham. Even better as we had fantastic weather for October. It was warm, dry and beautiful clear blue skies. Got my fix of Northumberland for another year but will definitely be back.
