Set on a working farm, this property is an ideal base for guests who enjoy outdoor activities.

Within a traditional steading courtyard, these three charming holiday cottages (refs 30101, 30102 and 30103) are in the heart of a working hill farm in the picturesque Tweedsmuir Hills in the Scottish Borders. With wonderful hill walking and biking, they are ideal for those seeking a comfortable base close to outdoor activities, or a peaceful retreat in a lovely rural setting, and for stalking, shooting and fishing in season. Although apparently remote, Edinburgh is only a scenic hour away and Glasgow is a little further. Converted from original stabling for carriage horses, the holiday cottages have been thoughtfully equipped and furnished with a generous provision of en-suite facilities and can accommodate up to 12 guests in all. For around 30 years hydro power has provided clean energy for the farm and steading and a computerised 9-pin bowling alley with a spacious entertainment area is available by arrangement (at cost). There is a network of well-established tracks and forest rides throughout the estate’s unspoiled open hills and forests along both sides of the upper reaches of the River Tweed, and most of the farm is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The summit of Broad Law 2,790ft, is a good hike rewarded by panoramic views on a clear day and Hearthstanes is midway along the 121 mile Solway to Forth Cycle ride. Enjoy a wonderfully scenic drive past Tweedsmuir Reservoir to St Mary’s Loch and down to Selkirk, or visit historic Traquair House and Gardens at Dawyk and Kailzie, where there is an osprey watch, from Easter to late August. Shop, pub and restaurant 13 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen. Separate toilet. First floor: 3 bedrooms: 1 double with en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet, 2 twin, both with en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet.

Electric cooker. Washing machine. Microwave.

All properties: Hydropower electric central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freesat TV. DVD. Wi-fi. Shared courtyard. Parking (2 cars). Cycle store. Shared 9-pin bowling alley (at cost). Natural water supply from spring. Pets - working farm and sheep country. No smoking. NB: Stream and two ponds in grounds.

An excellent holiday. Beautiful location. Ralph was a friendly and accommodating host. The cottage was well laid out and equipped. Very comfortable. The farm generates its own power by hydro - we were always warm. The WiFi was variable, but that was explained in the literature. Tweedsmuir is lovely and the local towns of Moffatt and Peebles are great. The parallel valley, A708, is outstanding as was the road over the tops past the reservoirs. Lots of birds of prey. Will certainly go again.

Lategillan Rig is set in the corner of a secluded square of 3 holiday cottages and amenity buildings on a hill farm, with a babbling stream running right past its back - peace and quiet is assured! The cottage is very cosy and warm, and all three upstairs bedrooms are ensuite, plus there is also a downstairs toilet off the hall. There was an endless supply of hot water always available any time of day or night as there are 2 hot water storage tanks. The wall mounted freeview TV/DVD player ensures everyone has a good view of screen. The compact kitchen catered easily with cooking meals for six, and the dishwasher made light work of cleaning up after meals. There is a washing machine readily available in the tack room across the square, and there is a large airing cupboard upstairs for drying clothes. There are lots of tracked roads and fields without livestock for long scenic walks - the views of the River Tweed in the valley are awesome - our dog never got so many walks every day! Broughton village is about 10 minutes away, with Moffat & Peebles both about half an hours scenic drive (well worth visiting), and Edinburgh about 55 minutes away. We had excellent warm and dry weather during our week's stay - but if the weather is poor, there is always the bowling alley in the square to keep everyone occupied if it's raining.
