This charming Cornish holiday cottage is in the heart of this pretty hamlet, a short drive from the town of Camelford with its shops, pubs and restaurants. It has a cosy living room with an open fire, an en-suite master bedroom and a kitchen/dining room with slate floors and an Aga. The garden is to the front of the property and has a sitting-out area which is ideal for morning coffee or al fresco dining. The holiday cottage is close to the harbour village of Port Isaac, made famous by the TV series ‘Doc Martin’, with its selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. Also within easy reach are the coastal villages of Boscastle and Tintagel, which is the mythical home of King Arthur. Just down the coast is Padstow with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants including Rick Stein’s famous fish restaurant. Here you can take a ferry across to Rock to enjoy some of the watersports on offer. You can also cycle or walk along the Camel Trail which follows the Camel Estuary along to the market town of Wadebridge and beyond to Bodmin. A short drive away is Bodmin Moor which is unspoilt moorland at its best. Golf club nearby, and Trebarwith Strand beach only a few miles away. Shop and restaurant 2 miles, pub 1 mile.

The cottage was nice enough. The aga looked welcoming but unfortunately no heat coming from it. Which was a shame as this was one of the attractions of booking. In the info folder told 'do not touch aga' as it's professionally switched on. The heating worked well, so that was good. The sofa had one good spot to sit in, if you didn't sit on the right-hand side then unfortunately you are going to find it uncomfortable. The arm-chair was just about tolerable. No issues with the wifi, all good there. The beds had really thin ikea mattresses on so when you laid on them, they did not feel much better than a plank of wood. My hip started burning straight away with the pressure. I tried to add extra padding using the single quilts as we didn't use the bunks. This didn't really help. So night-time was not a pleasure. The mattresses need replacing. Mattress toppers are not going to be enough. The front room furniture needs replacing too. I was greatful for there being a downstairs loo, that was handy. The main bedroom with the ensuite is small. You can't open the door fully to access the ensuite nor can someone get in and out of bed properly by the window. Location was ideal for Padstow and Boscastle. I enjoyed my week in the cottage, but I want a little bit more of my home comforts next time I go away.

Response on behalf of the owner; Gumburnville is currently undergoing a refurbishment including a large loft conversion and new furniture in the lounge. It will be completed by the beginning of March.

The cottage is very picturesque and cosy in a good location just off the beaten track but definitely not worth the price we paid (expensive compared to other properties of similar description). It was clean but very dusty in areas with stains on furniture, carpets and bedding (not the linen, this was fresh and clean). The third bedroom is advertised as suitable for small children (but doesn't tell you there is no room to put clothes or even get into the room as the bunkbed fills the whole floor space right to the door, literally !). There were several things broken or not working which was a shame. This could be such a beautiful cottage with a bit of tlc.

Response on behalf of the owner:- Thank you for your comments. We are sorry you were not 100% happy with your stay. We take all feedback very seriously and will take action where possible to rectify the points you raised. We will be buying a new sofa, mattress toppers and new kitchen equipment in the next few weeks. With regards to the 3rd bedroom - yes it is small and we state it is only really suitable for children. My 9 year old twins love sleeping in it and we have had lots of feedback from other guests whose kids love it too. We do appreciate that it is a very small box room though. It's true there isn't any storage in the room but there is a chest of drawers on the landing outside the room and hooks on the door to hang things. Plus two large wardrobes in the other two rooms. Thanks again for the feedback.

We loved the cottage, it's clearly put together with lots of love and attention. It was well equipped and we found the beds were comfortable. We were disappointed that the kitchen could have done with a good clean and some of the equipment, such as the frying pans and cafetière were decidedly grubby. Some mould around the tap fixtures in main bathroom could have been easily removed with some bleach and the covers on the chairs in lounge needed a wash. All these points aside we did enjoy our stay in the cottage.

We enjoyed our week in Gumburnville. The cottage is well equipped and tastefully decorated, with everything in working order. The enclosed garden is ideal if you have a dog, and there is garden furniture, which (in March!) we didn't use. Location is ideal for exploration of the delightful SW coastal path and beaches, nearby Tintagel, Bodmin and Padstow. Although there are no shops or pubs within easy walking distance these can be found in Camelford only about 2 miles away. There are dog-friendly beaches within a few miles, and the house and gardens at Lanhydrock (Bodmin) is outstanding. The only downside for us was that both the living room settee and the bed in the ensuite bedroom didn't provide the same support as our own at home. But overall, very satisfied with our choice.
