Welcome Cottages

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

A holiday cottage set in a rural location with a patio area that has some stunning views of the countryside.

This holiday cottage, with an outbuilding between the two properties, has a large, private and secluded patio area perched above the fields behind, offering far-reaching rural views across Blackmore Vale and cider orchards. There is a raised pond and fountain where you can listen to the sounds of birdsong. Locally produced award-winning cider is available from the farm opposite. The interior has been decorated and furnished, with great attention to detail and style. Attached to the owners home, it provides an excellent base from which to explore this corner of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. There are many countryside walks directly from the property, so you can leave the car and explore the beautiful Dorset countryside by foot. This includes a nice stroll to Buckhorn Weston where you will find the village pub/restaurant that welcomes walkers and their dogs. About 5 miles to the east you will Shaftesbury, a small market town in Dorset with a recorded history that goes back to the Saxon hilltop forts. You can experience what it was like back in King Alfred’s time whilst walking round the ruins of the Abbey, or just enjoy the history of the area displayed in the Gold Hill Museum. The town is the home of Gold Hill, made famous by the ‘Hovis’ advertisement, and has magnificent views over the Blackmore Vale. There are a wide variety of independent shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. Surrounding Shaftesbury you will find the towns of Gillingham, Mere, Sturminster Newton and Sherbone, which make up the Blackmore Vale, where you can follow in the footsteps of Thomas Hardy along the River Stour, as well as visit Gillingham Museum with its railway history. You can also visit Sturminster Newton’s Mill and explore many of the varied and interesting shops and sights along the way. Sherbone, famous for its abbey and range of quality independent shops is only a short drive away. This area is the ‘gateway to the south west’ from which you can tour the area from Stonehenge in the east, to Bath and Bristol to the north, Bournemouth and the Jurassic Coast to the south. Within a short drive is Stourhead, an estate at the source of the River Stour, near Mere, which includes a Palladian mansion and world-famous landscape garden (NT). Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 1/2 mile.

Ground floor: Living room with patio doors/dining room/kitchen with wooden floor. Shower room with walk-in shower/bath and toilet. First floor: 2 bedrooms, 1 double, 1 twin. Bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and toilet.

Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. DVD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washing machine. Dishwasher. Fridge/freezer. Wi-fi. Patio with sitting-out area and furniture. Parking (2 cars). Welcome pack. No smoking. No children under 5 years. NB: Unfenced raised pond in grounds.

Such an amazing cottage, the owners are fantastic, it really is a countryside escape, plenty of room for supplies and facilities to cook. We will return again and again, plus our dog loves it there!

We had a most pleasant and relaxing stay at the cottage. The cottage itself was second to none in its condition, cleanliness and location. We were also most struck by the overall silence in the area at night being used to residing near the somewhat conjested and rumbling A27. We would not hesitate in recommending the cottage to our family and friends for a stay. As we said in the visitors' book there is a corner of this planet that is forever England and that is Green Oak Cottage.

A lovely little cottage with a nice view and really friendly and helpful owners. Nice little extra touches like arrival gifts make it feel more special. Wifi and phone signal very weak and temperamental, but can be good to get away from all that!

Just my wife and I stayed for a week, so we had plenty of space. Cottage was spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped. Jane and David made us very welcome but left us to enjoy our holiday. The beds are very comfortable and the nights are so dark and quiet that you can't fail to sleep well. Lovely sunsets to be seen from the patio when the weather is right. We had a lovely stay and would happily pay a repeat visit. David is building a new holiday chalet next door which looks fabulous. Be sure to look at that when it is finished!

To start with positives: 1) Very nice and friendly hosts 2) A 'character' home (though I prefer Modern homes) 3) Nice little garden and views to Cattle grazing. Not so right (for me & my family): 1) Location is not great except for limited view to cattle grazing, there is nothing in this area. 2) As this property is located in a village, suffered very very poor mobile network/signals and almost zero internet. (has a wifi router but hardly get internet -wifi) Thought of enjoying a movie after day out, however TV is not smart and also no WIFI (proper). 3) Steps were too steep- not child friendly 4) It would have been very handy if basic amenities were supplied Milk , bread, Coffee machine etc were supplied. ( I had assumed these, from my previous stay which had all these supplied). However, As mentioned above, nothing wrong with the property but may be not the right one for us (with baby) looking for modern with fantastic location at best price.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We do not take children under 5 years of age (clearly stated on the website), so perhaps they measured their stay at Green Oak Cottage against an establishment and areas suitable for children under this age. We do leave a welcome pack which is usually gratefully received, and we always offer the opportunity to request any additional items that were not already supplied. This guest did not make any requests. Broadband is supplied, its quality is totally beyond our control and it worked fine during their stay at its usual gentle Dorset speed; this cannot match the speed and expectation supplied in towns and cities. The television is brand new with a full free view package, alongside this a range of films are available on DVD. The stairs match current building legislation and are no different to those found in modern houses at this time. We are within a 10mile radius of several high quality tourist attractions, and Green Oak Cottage is surrounded by field and orchards and far reaching views, in the heart of what was the Royal Stud. We are saddened that this guest felt it necessary to pick up on so many negatives during their two-night stay; this was clearly in relation to their personal family requirements with a small child under 5.
