English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

An ideal base for two with its own private garden, this area is great for walkers and cyclists.

Located in the village of Hengrave, just a short distance from historic Bury St Edmunds, Garden Cottage is a charming, Grade II listed, single-storey barn conversion that dates back to 1853 and which has a delightful private garden area. Adjoining the owners’ home, it has been lovingly and stylishly restored to provide a welcoming holiday retreat at any time. An ideal base to explore the delights of Suffolk. Bury St Edmunds with its cathedral and abbey ruins also offers outstanding examples of Georgian architecture particularly the Theatre Royal, built in 1819, a rare example of a Georgian Playhouse, there is an excellent range of interesting shops, restaurants and pubs. The town also hosts annual events such a Christmas fayre, festival and a hidden gardens event, as well as weekly Wednesday and Saturday outdoor markets. National Trust properties can be found at nearby Ickworth Park and Anglesey Abbey and gardens. Also worth visiting are Newmarket for a day at the races, the city of Cambridge and Ely with its 12th-century cathedral. With 3 golf courses nearby, a good area for horse riding, cycling and walking, it’s an ideal location for the more active. Shop 1 mile and pub ½ mile.

One of the best cottages we have stayed in , the owners were very nice and welcoming , this cottage was perfect for a short break ideal to explore Bury St Edmunds and quaint Suffolk towns and villages within driving distance. There were no walks as such on the doorstep so a car was essential to explore further a field. We would definitely recommend this cottage too discerning travellers.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. There is a walk in our village of Hengrave that leads down to the River Lark where you join the St. Edmund Way. There is then a choice of walking north to West Stow or south to Bury St Edmunds.

Very comfortable cottage with kind and friendly hosts. Good location for visits to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk villages and NT properties. Worthy of its 5 stars.

This cottage is one of the best properties we have stayed in: that's saying something after four decades or so of self catering holidays generally taken in four star minimum rated places. The attention to detail is what impresses most: at no point in the week did we ever think "If only there was..." From the generous welcome package of decent bread, wine, milk etc., to the immaculate grounds, brilliant shower, very comfortable bed and generously equipped kitchen it fully earns ten points. Very friendly hosts too. Although it is has only one bedroom, the amount of space actually exceeds many two bed cottages. Highly recommended. As is this corner of Suffolk as a touring base, with Constable Country to the South, Cambridgeshire, Ely and the fens to the West, and the Suffolk heaths and coast to the East. Norfolk not too far for a longer day trip. I stress however that there was enough closer at hand to keep a first time visitor occupied without travelling that far. Bury St Edmunds - on your doorstep - is a lovely historic town with lots of restaurants and an interesting centre that includes the National Trust owned Theatre Royal with it's unique Regency interior. Similarly close is the experimental archaeology of the Anglo Saxon village and, at Ickworth, an Italianate Country House that is one of the most striking and interesting National Trust properties in the country. Even the weather was good (Your mileage may vary on this point!).
