Quietness and privacy, make this holiday retreat ideal for families, an easy drive away from Exeter and Taunton.

This beamed, terraced holiday retreat, situated in the centre of this small sleepy village and offering quietness and privacy, is ideal for a family holiday or for walkers. There is a decked area and steps down to the courtyard leading over a little bridge to a lovely main garden. Stockland is a small rural village in Devon, close to the boundary with Somerset. Its nearest neighbouring towns are Honiton and Axminster, which are 6 miles and 5 miles away respectively. It has a poplulation of around 600. The village is placed within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Stockland parish had historically been an exclave of Dorset until the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844. National Trust houses and gardens are a short distance away, or take a drive into Axminster, where Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s ’River Cottage Canteen’ can be found. Exeter and Taunton are an easy drive. The west country region in the UK has a mild climate, very pretty villages and good train links. Lots to do in the area for all age groups. Honiton is the ’jewel in the crown’, in east Devon, less populated than some areas, and once you have visited, you will want to return. The coast is 20 minutes’ drive from Stockland. Beach 10 miles. Shop and restaurant 1 mile, pub 3 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room with wooden floor. 3 steps down to kitchen with tiled floor. Separate toilet. First floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Woodburner in living room (initial fuel included). Air source heat pump central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. DVD. CD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washing machine. Dishwasher. Freezer. Wi-fi. Large, enclosed lawned garden with decked area, courtyard, sitting-out area and furniture. On road parking. Cycle store. No smoking. NB: Bridge over fenced stream, 15 yards. Drops into stream and 6 steps in garden.

This was a last minute booking so not a lot of choice on sites but was attracted by cost, quirkiness, garden and cottage look. Ferndale was indeed all of the above and was set in an attractive village with a lovely church and local walks. As for the cottage, apart from a faulty toaster,a bath plug that didn't lift, a toilet seat that didn't stay up, average bed and sofa, it was sufficiently well equipped with all kitchen requirements, toiletries, tv,wifi etc and was clean. The garden was nice with a little bridge over a stream too. Locally, apart from a pretty farm/tea shop that charged £9+ for a pot of tea,2x small scones with jam/clotted cream and a coke(1.5 miles away), A30- garage/shop + American restaurant(3.5miles) & White hart Inn(5.3miles) there wasn't much else but links to other places via A roads was good.Overall,a nice place & value for money but woulnt stay again as parking was an issue! states on street parking but luck of draw if you got the one space available. For 2 of the 5 day stay we had to park at back of disused pub, opposite cottage. Seamed safe but wasn't great having to load car on leaving! Also, the road was surprisingly busy with farm vehicles going past quite early.

We had such an amazing week!! The cottage was beautiful and was perfect for our family of 3 plus pooch. The surrounding area was lovely and there was so much to do by travelling a short distance by car. The owner was very polite and helpful which made our stay even more perfect. I would definitely recommend Ferndale Cottage and we would return in a heart beat.
