Description

A stunning position with excellent views of the nearby fells, an ideal base for walkers.

Set in a stunning rural position within the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Fell Cottage is a traditional limestone conversion of a former farm building restored to provide a wonderful quaint holiday retreat. The cottage is situated in beautiful Raydale, a rural and unspoilt area of Wensleydale. It is surrounded by traditional farming country and ringed by high fells.
In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Marsett itself has true rustic country charm as cattle and sheep can roam freely on the village green. Horse ridsing and fishing nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 31/2 miles.

All on ground floor. Living room/dining area with stone flagged floor. Kitchen. 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin, both with en-suite shower room and toilet.

Woodburner in living room (initial fuel included). Electric heaters, electricity and bed linen included. Towel hire. Cot and high chair on request. Freeview TV/DVD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Long standing velux roof leak in lounge, garden tatty ie dead plant in hanging basket and weeds in border, porch internal light not working, lack of kitchen utensils, incorrect tv remote control, table cloth ingrained with dirt. unable to control our own heating as it was linked to owners cottage heating system . Un-aware of large camp site on field adjacent to cottage. Access road unsafe for motorbikes because of deep ruts especially when wet. Unusual that there was no visitors comments book available. We only ever book for 4 star accommodation but felt that this should have been 3 star.

Stayed here from 25th to 28th Feb. Loved it. Only criticism is the central heating never came on once and it was a freezing few days, but there are 2 oil filled heaters that kept the chill off the place. The log burner was excellent, I loved it - previous reviewers said it wasn't warm but I can assure you if you use it properly it's roasting!! It is quite remote (4 miles from Hawes which is lovely) along tiny roads but I like that and could happily live like that. Very quiet place, lovely walks - first thing we heard on arrival was a Woodpecker, it was magical almost. Never saw the owners but there was no need to, although it would have been nice for them just to say "hello" - but it's a mall gripe.

We both really enjoyed staying at Fell cottage. The owners were very friendly and polite and the cottage itself was perfect for a base if you're happy to explore. The driveway was very wet when we arrived and as it's mostly mud it made it difficult to ride down on motorbike but that was our fault for not coming in car! Wifi didn't work for us but it was described on the website as not being very good so we could forgive that! :) the house was very well equipped and the wood burner was lovely in the evenings! Thank you for making our stay so comfortable! Feb 2016

This is a nice little cottage in a beautiful (but very remote) location - 20 miles from nearest supermarket, so do what we did and stock up first. The owners are lovely and we had a great time, but be aware, this property does not have full central heating - only the living room and one bedroom had functioning radiators when we stayed (in January). As the gas lighter did not have enough gas to light the wood burner, we had one very cold night. Because of this, I can only recommend staying here in mild weather, and I would bring slippers etc for the stone floors and an extra jumper (and some matches) just in case… Other than this, the cottage is suitably equipped and would be a good stopover for walkers etc

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments. There are numerous local shops in the nearest town which is only 5 miles away. There are 6 radiators throughout the cottage plus a wood burner so nobody should be cold. As we live next door we couldn't understand why nobody asked for help on lighting the stove and switching on the radiators.

Lovely cottage but difficult to find, no signs for the cottage until you reach it, although we did arrive in the dark. The cottage isnt really big enough for 4 adults but was fine for two of us. Its in a lovely place and we would like to visit in the spring/summer. Was great for dogs as the garden fully enclosed and dog friendly.

An excellent cottage tucked away in beautiful Wensleydale, nothing too much trouble for the lovely owners. highly recommended.
