Evergreen is a lovely cottage and certainly deserves more than the 3 star grade given on the website. I have stayed in 4 star rated properties which are nowhere near as good. Although I stayed in mid January with it being below freezing outside the cottage was very warm and there were absolutely no draughts, this is thanks to the gas central heating which is rarely found in other holiday cottages (which more often than not rely on bottled gas, electric heating or the dreaded night storage heaters!) The other benefit to being on mains gas is that there is a gas hob in the large kitchen, another lovely change to the awful ceramic hobs usually found. The location is not isolated (which is good), being on the outskirts of Hordle in an upmarket semi-residential area on a quaint lane, it is a very quiet area indeed with about one car passing by on the lane outside every 30 minutes. At night it is extremely peaceful and all I ever heard were owls hooting outside - lovely. The neighbours barely seem to exist at all, nothing is heard or seen of them which suited me. Although there is a wifi internet connection this is strictly for simple web browsing only, do not expect to stream anything as the downloading speed maxed out at 0.6mbps. This is still better than nothing at all (which is what I experienced in my last three cottages) but hopefully the owners can upgrade this speed soon as sometimes it is nice to watch a film online in the evenings, however this is really such a minor trifling issue. There seems to be a newer, larger HDTV than that shown in the picture & I successfully plugged in a USB drive to watch downloaded films. Overall the cottage was super, with a powerful hot shower and probably the best equipped kitchen I have experienced (they even had a rolling pin!), the place was beautifully clean too. It was also a bonus that you could actually park in your own private driveway right next to the cottage, again this necessity can be surprisingly absent in other rentals. Best of all, you are not ‘adjacent to the owners house’ as 90% of rentals seem to be; you are in your own house in its own grounds with nobody interfering, snooping or getting in your way. If you want isolation you won’t be bothered!

Delightful, cosy cottage; oozes charm. We wanted something near to our daughter as we visit regularly, but were fed-up with hotels and the single room. This was perfect. Our autistic son and younger daughter thought it great. Friendly owner promptly resolves any problems, and a gardener maintains the garden. It is clean, comfortable and well equipped. We are most defiantly coming back; just hope dates are available. 😀

The cottage itself was nice, the location was fine, not very clean, there was not enough towels for 4 guests, we had no problem with working the shower it just did not have enough pressure so it was a bit pathetic. there was no dvd remote so we were unable to watch any of our dvds we had taken to watch in the evenings, and the place was a bit damp.

Response on behalf of the owner: We were surprised to read your comments Robert. The cottage is cleaned to a very high standard top to bottom every week on a Saturday morning. The same cleaner has worked for us for a good number of years. We are very happy with her work and looking at the pretty high ‘Reevoo’ scores we get, so are the bulk of our guests. We leave two large freshly laundered towels per person per week, again we are surprised that this was not enough for you. We invite any of our guests to call me personally to help wherever possible during their stay. It is a shame that you did not call me, I may have been able to arrange for the housekeeper to bring some more towels to you. The shower has had previous comments on its slightly temperamental nature but never has anybody complained about its ‘pathetic’ lack of pressure? With regard to the dvd player remote control, it was taken by the guest immediately before you and of course unless I am told about this I am not to know. Fortunately there are buttons on the front of the player that operate the play, stop and eject functions. I suppose they are a little small and perhaps you did not see them? Again I could have helped you with this problem had you called me. As I mentioned below in reply to Beverly’s comments about the cottage being damp (who also gave us an uncharacteristic score of only 6) The cottage is very old and some of it is ‘Cobb’. Cobb is an old building material that relies on its being slightly damp to retain its structural stability. Maybe had you read the reviews, my feedback too, before being quite so critical you may have been a little more understanding of an old, beautiful and unique building that retains a wealth of character? Once again you could have called me at any point during your stay to discuss what you felt was not to your liking.

A really lovely, cosy cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property was clean and welcoming and extremely well equipped. The stairs are steep but we knew this before booking and our children (ages 6,5 & 3) all coped well with them. It was a lovely homely place to return to after a days out in the forest. Ceilings are low so tall people need to be careful but this is the nature of old cottages, and all part of the charm. We'd be delighted to return to this cottage at a future date.

The cottage is very sweet, well decorated and has an excellent kitchen diner, which is well equipped. It is well located to drive to all the main attractions in the area, being able to get to the coast and the forest really easily. We were pleasantly surprised to find a travel cot erected ready for us, as I didn't see it on the details (though we had taken our own and used it as it seemed more sturdy). A good touch. Our main issue was the heating. We stayed in the winter and it snowed whilst we were there, with temperatures not rising above 4 degrees on any day, so it was cold. You expect older houses to be poorly insulated and have draughts so this isn't a complaint, but may be useful to know if you plan to holiday in the winter. The lounge is comfy and would probably have been cosy with the log burner lit, but as our 10 month old son is cruising about and very inquisitive we decided not to light it. The heating is good, but the lack of a door into the lounge meant that there was a significant draught that could not be overcome. The kitchen diner was also cold - needs another radiator or some draught excluder around the main door. At night the bedrooms got very toasty initially (22 degrees) , but once the heating went off dropped down to 15 degrees - this made it tricky to know how to dress the little one for bed. The duvet on the double beds is really a summer weight one, and we topped it up with one from the other room, which wouldn't have been an option if there were people in there too. Really we could have had the heating on continuously but we would have roasted as we couldn't find the thermostat. Overall we liked the cottage and felt that in the summer it would be a lovely place to stay. As other comments in the guest book suggested, perhaps a curtain over the lounge doorway, a thicker duvet and a little attention would make it a little more snug in winter.

    Response from: Administrator

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments and observations concerning Evergreen Cottage. The radiators do all have thermostatic valves. This controls their individual temperatures. I suspect that a previous guest has altered them to suit their needs and they have not been returned to their usual positions. In the very cold weather we normally keep the heating on constant. We control the radiators individually at their own thermostats. We will add a note to the visitor book to that effect. A far heavier weight duvet, new pillows too, is now on the main bed. Please note that the oak box in bedroom two contains more duvets and blankets. We have the decorators booked to redecorate all of the interior later this month - in readiness for a busy summer season. We do this around springtime every year. Although the cottage is 95% double glazed I do accept that the very 'period' rear door is not. I will take this opportunity to get some work done to it so that it becomes a better fit and is less draughty generally. Thank you for your comments.
