Murvagh Blue Flag beach and Holmes sandy beach are great for watersports enthusiasts. Shop and restaurant 4½ miles, pub 600 yards.

From Donegal Town it is a careful 15-minute drive along the winding Blue Stack Drive to the cottage at Drumboarty, with the mountains in view beyond. This sets the scene for a rural Irish cottage which has been a family home for generations. There are ponies grazing in the adjacent paddocks and the outhouses still store turf for the fire. The cottage itself has a cosy, if a little shaded, front-room, the three main bedrooms spacious and prettily decorated. Perhaps a little more attention to cleaning would give the place a polished look, especially in the kitchen and the bathroom which could do with a few improvements – deep sink has a plug with no chain, fixtures not well-cleaned – and not ideal as a washroom for a large family. It would also be helpful if it were standard for cottage information files to include instructions for activating water and central heating and relevant socket outlets labelled to purpose. The heating stopped working on the second evening while the water thermostat was set to a scalding temperature which we could not adjust. And while the cottage specifications at the time of our booking clearly stated a gas hob, the property did in fact have a digital hob which not everyone will find easy to use. The outhouse containing the washing machine could have done with a good sweep. Similarly, the seating area to the rear is a little drab, a shame given the prettily landscaped garden out front which would make a splendid family picnic spot. Care should be taken with pets or children as the cottage has only split-rail fencing with gate onto a T-junction, and the scattering of new cottages around means regular through traffic. This cottage combines a rural retreat with easy access to Donegal Town and smaller shops. If you are driving from Dublin, Enniskillen one hour from the cottage has some excellent superstores (Tesco, M&S) if you plan stocking up before reaching the cottage. Tesco and Dunnes at Letterkenny also one hour’s drive away. The cottage is recommended as an ideal location for visiting Donegal, Sligo and neighbouring countries of the North.

There are just a couple of things that could add to the cottage. The fridge is inadequate for seven people and we struggled to get our groceries put away. The bed in the bedroom to the right as you enter the cottage seems to be balanced on two drawers and is very noisy. Overall we were content with the facilities.

It is a very remote and unspoiled area. It is ideal if you wish to do nothing but reading books, light a BBQ and just chilling out. Very close to the town and amazing beaches.
