English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Portsmouth with The Mary Rose and Nelsons Victory are easily reached from this light and airy barn conversion.

Amidst beautiful rolling countryside and farmland, set in the grounds of the owner’s farmhouse within a working farm, Drayton Farm Barns (PDDP, PDDQ & PDDR) have been skillfully converted from one large barn. Offering plenty of light and space, these beautifully presented barns have been tastefully furnished to a high specification. Henwood (PDDR) is an ‘upside down’ house, designed with the living area on the first floor to take advantage of the superb countryside views. They enjoy shared use of a large lawned garden, and direct access to miles of scenic walks in this wonderful part of Hampshire within the Meon Valley, with the river meandering through the farmland.
Just over a mile is the quaint thatched roof village of East Meon, which has shops, a church and two renowned pubs serving good food. West Meon (where Thomas Lord rests, founder of Lords cricket) is also close by with award-winning butchers and pub. Within easy reach are the glorious South Downs, Portsmouth with Nelsons Victory, The Mary Rose, waterside dining, designer shopping and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight, as well as Winchester Cathedral, Southampton with its extensive maritime history, the vast heathland walks and riding in The New Forest, historic Chichester with cathedral and festival theatre, beaches at the Witterings or Hayling Island, Watercress steam train, Jane Austen’s House, Gilbert White’s House, Birdworld and Marwell Zoo. London is about an hour by train from nearby Petersfield. Shops 1½ miles.

Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. Twin bedroom with additional single bed (for +1), TV and en-suite shower room with toilet. Additional external exit to avoid outside staircase. First floor: Beamed open-plan living/dining room with oak floor and kitchen area with slate floor. Separate toilet.

A wonderful upside down house. Henwood is very comfortable and very well equipped. Visiting in October, we found it warm and cosy. We enjoyed watching the red kites flying around each morning, and seeing the animals on the farm.

Lovely location & well appointed conversion. Some issues with shower (temperature extremes then failed on 2nd day) but seemed to be a new fault so not a serious criticism.

Wonderful place to stay. Excellent for a day out in Portsmouth at the harbour as well. The hosts were really great and made sure that everything was excellent for us.

We enjoyed a lovely week in some wonderful Hampshire countryside. The walks suggested in the accommodation proved to just right for us. The flat is sort of upside down with the kitchen diner at the top and the bedrooms at ground floor level; we loved it. The barn conversion is well furnished with everything in good order. The shop in West Meon is worth a visit in itself. Staying on a working farm was all he hoped for and more. There is a rear garden area which is very attractive just to sit in and kept apart from the working part of the farm. I not sure if we would have liked it so much if our children had been at the toddler stage (they are now in their mid-fifties) as the garden has some steep steps to it but for older kids has some games. All-in-all, a very good holiday with plenty of free parking and good WiFi which helps. This would be good place for cyclists
