This holiday was to celebrate my 70th birthday, but it will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, the farm house was damp, there was no one there to welcome us to the property just a set of keys on the window ledge. It was raining when we arrived and the water was cascading off the main roof onto the conservatory below the noise was deafening, there was no manual to inform us how the appliances worked or how to get hot water for simple tasks like washing. The house was full of personal effects belonging to the owners with bedroom wardrobes locked & a utility room / games room filled with boxes of shoes & clothing. I have sent a fully detailed letter including photographs highlighting the problem areas this included carbon monoxide detectors with no batteries & a smoke detector that did not work & another that was just left on a shelf. the whole experience was terrible.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am very surprised and disappointed by this review as I had spoken to both of the guests on at least 2 occasions and they never once expressed any issue with the accommodation while I spent some time outlining and discussing the various places of interest in the vicinity with them. I have a distinct memory of 2 happy people enjoying their stay at my property. I am genuinely perplexed by this. I go out of my way always to assist and help my guests in every way possible so that they will enjoy their time and carry away good memories and hopefully come back again sometime in the future. I am really sorry that it did not work out for them. It is an old farmhouse dating back to 1870 and is loved by most of my guests. I did have a burst water pipe the week before the guests arrived and it may have contributed to some damp smell but it is by no means a damp house. There is oil-fired central heating installed throughout the house. I try as far as possible to greet all my guests on arrival and often provide a full Irish breakfast as a welcome gift. I have a long track record of good reviews - even achieving a gold star award . However on this occasion, I had been suddenly taken ill on Thursday with a serious heart condition and my partner and I were both in Dublin ( 120 miles away ) attending a private clinic. I apologise to my guests for this non-greeting but it was unavoidable. We did not have any rain for weeks before my guests arrived and I was unaware that the gutters were blocked with leaves and debris but I rectified this immediately I became aware of it. I do not normally have a manual to inform how the various appliances work as I am usually there on arrival and talk my guests through the procedures. I think this is a good idea and I am presently compiling a manual to rectify this. The water is heated by an immersion in the hot press and is operated by an on/off switch. When the hot tap is turned on in the kitchen, it takes about 3 minutes for the hot water to reach the tap. The battery in the carbon monoxide alarm had been removed by a previous guest and I was unaware of this. My apologies. Yes there are some personal items in the playroom as I live in this house from October until May and I have dealt with this. There are 3 double wardrobes in the big bedroom and I keep one locked where I store some extra bed linen. Normally the other 2 double wardrobes are sufficient for my guests. Again I apologise to my guests and am sorry and disappointed that they did not experience our wonderful Irish welcome and attractions.
