Welsh Country Cottages

From a touch of luxury to characterful heritage, experience one of our truly inspiring holiday properties.

Carefully converted to provide comfort, this charming cottage offers peace and relaxation, yet with plenty to do in the area.

Originally built as a barn and cottage in the 17th century, these delightful holiday properties, one a barn and one a cottage, have been carefully converted, combining their interesting features with comfort, and making good use of pretty cottage-style prints, soft furnishings and some antiques, in keeping with their period character. Each has its own entrance with sloping gardens, and both these charming holiday properties are tucked away from it all, offering peace, tranquillity and lovely south-facing views across the valley. This is magnificent walking and bird-watching country (many different species spotted in the garden). The nearby Clywedog Lake provides good fishing and sailing, whilst excellent mountain biking facilities can be found a little further afield at Machynlleth.
Five miles away is the pretty market town of Llanidloes with golf, tennis, bowls, swimming, leisure centre and the newly opened Red Kite Centre, which boasts live transmission from nests in the Hafren Forest. The town’s fine architecture includes the town hall, the market hall, built on timber stilts, and two imposing 19th-century chapels. Good selection of pubs and restaurants nearby.
The coast at Cardigan Bay is only 45 minutes by car, a spectacular journey through glorious scenery across the Plynlimon mountains to the university town and lively seaside resort of Aberystwyth with its cliff railways and various cultural and entertainment diversions, or further north along the Dovey estuary to Aberdovey. Here, the coast with its sandy beach offers opportunities for canoeing, windsurfing and swimming, and beautiful walks can be enjoyed amid the nearby Plas Penhelig Gardens. There are miles of sand and shingle beaches to enjoy, backed by dunes along the coast to Tywyn. The slipway at Aberdovey makes it a popular sailing centre, also good for surfing, water-skiing and fishing trips. Golf and horse riding within 5 miles. Shops 1¼ miles, pub ¼ mile.

Built at a slight angle to The Cottage. The open-plan living room has a wood-burning stove; there are steps down to the cottage kitchen/dining room which has fitted units and stable door to garden. Double bedroom with French door to patio. Small twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

The pictures of the Barn do not do it justice! It is far more beautiful and cute than the pictures show. However, the reason we would not stay again, at present, is mostly due to the size and condition of the bathroom. It is exceptionally small, and very outdated. Other small matters relating to the cottage, are that there was only 1 tea towel, no drainer, (we chose not to use the dishwasher most of the time), mice droppings in the cupboard and on the work surface, the knives were mostly fairly blunt (and so was the knife sharpener!) and the heating being on a timer controlled by the owner. The heating goes of at 10am, and although there was a wood burning stove, the cottage would become very cold by the time the heating came back on. The advert stated that the logs were included, but on arriving, we were told by the owner that the logs were £5 per bag, and that there were 6 bags already stacked. I mentioned that the advert had stated that logs were included, and the owner said that some adverts included them and some didn't, but that as we had an advert that did include them, there would be no charge. All these issues aside, with an adaption to the bathroom, and control of the heating, the cottage is one of the most beautiful we have stayed in, with stunning views, and fantastic location. Therefore with a few minor tweaks, this would rate 100%.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I have only recently seen your comments on your visit to Dolgenau Hir, the barn in March so please forgive my tardiness in responding. I am always grateful for constructive comments on my properties and your comments have been particularly helpful. I agree with your observation on the size of the bathroom and am currently working with a local builder and plumber designing an extension to rectify this. It is no mean task because of the available space. It is not possible to extend it inwards so we are looking at excavating outwards where again there is limited space but we are confident that we should have a new bathroom at the barn by this time next year. The signs of mice droppings are unforgivable. Being located in the country mice are a problem but I do ensure that I take all reasonable precautions to keep them at bay and my cleaners are very diligent at watching for signs. I can only apologise. I take on board your comments about the knives and tea towels; I will ensure that the knives are sharpened or replaced and that more tea towels will be made available in future. Again I apologise most sincerely for the confusion over the logs and will post instructions on how to adjust the timer on the heating for guests to have more control over the temperature in the cottage. I do appreciate your positive and constructive comments and hope you will accept my response as a sincere explanation.

We had a lovely time here with wonderful scenery and everything catered for. The only thing I would change was the lighting as the windows are small for a large living area and plants growing outside were growing over the windows restricting light further. Furniture was quirky but not always comfortable. The kitchen had everything I needed and I cooked each night and it was no trouble. The bedroom was lovely with plenty of storage space and the door leading to the patio was a luxury. All the curtains were nice and thick to keep the heat in and we were always warm enough. The property has lots of charm and there were lots of birds flying in and out of the beautiful garden. It was a delight and full of old fashioned charm.
