Description

Delgatie Castle sits peacefully amid fields and forests, on a large country estate

Historic accommodation, set in tranquil location

Delgatie Castle sits peacefully amid fields and forests, on a large country estate. It has a long and chequered history, dating back from 1050 and was once home to the late Captain Hay - a feudal baron. Now open to the public, the castle provides a wealth of interest for visitors, plus the opportunity to sample delicious home baking in the cosy tea room. Symbister Suite is located in the north wing of the castle, and has, as you would expect, all the style and ambience of a real stately home. Turriff, 3 miles, is home to a host of activities and interests. River fishing, with brown trout and salmon both available at cost. You can play golf on any of the several 18-hole courses in the area, or enjoy some time on a boating lake or even a putting green. Alternatively, play tennis, bowls, or go riding or shooting. Try the indoor sports and swimming pool complex. Nearby there are stately homes and castles to explore, museums and heritage centres, picturesque coastal villages, nature reserves and colourful parks, as well as famous distilleries. Advance grocery service available on request.

All on first floor: Living room. Dining room/kitchen with vaulted ceiling. 3 bedrooms: 1 double (four poster), 1 twin, 1 single. Shower room. Separate toilet.

Heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Cot. High chair on request. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washing machine. Freezer. Wi-fi. Private garden area. Shared, enclosed, lawned area. Shared use of estate grounds. Barbecue. Ample parking. No smoking. NB: There is a small, unfenced pool in the garden, 100 yards away.

Looking for something outstanding and a bit different? Stay in this slightly quirky, wonderful castle, oozing its splendid history. Our family have had an excellent, peaceful stay; all well appointed, managed and looked after, particularly the welcoming bacon and eggs and delicious fresh scones - best ever. Note that Joan, who has been running the castle for 35 years has received awards for her baking and a special community award for outstanding service. What we said to Joan: "thank you so much for the wonderful welcome and for accommodating us so thoughtfully. We have enjoyed the stay very much and marvel at how you run this wonderful place. Thank you so much for thinking of everything to make our stay so comfortable and enjoyable".

Great place to stay. Easy enough to get to costal places or visit Castles on the (Castle) trail. Joan is taking care of things. Don´t miss Laird´s kitchen it´s a treat - worth to visit EVERY day!

We had a lovely week here. The Symbister Suite had a comfortable friendly feeling. Lots of sunlight in the bedrooms the morning. Enjoyed wandering round the grounds. The castle itself was very interesting. A good base for visiting the many castles and gardens in this part of Scotland. The lairds kitchen was a good place for tea and scones.

Spacious living accommodation with a nice welcome gesture of bacon eggs, scones, Jams & bread milk, so really pleased with this! Great after a long drive up. Nice & peaceful and after the main castle area is locked up you can walk around the castle grounds by dark if you like & get a feel of it by evening. We enjoyed the interior preserved areas like a museum for display, & interesting info. There are enough towns nearby to buy food from, and a scenic costal drive. Loud Sterio which started early in mornings by the gardener which did not stop for the day was not nice though & right below the apartment. Not a very castle or Scottish atmosphere to get pop blaring out loudly & penetrating the living space. That could do with eliminating. But good otherwise. Nice Castle gift shop tastefully done out & with nice entrance area. The two smaller bedrooms were clean however in our opinion could do with a slight upgrade in design to hit a more castle feel mixing at the same time old look with more new features such as lampshades etc to make sleeping in them more of a luxury. Wifi was limited to the Kitchen area only but to us this was not a problem. Found a collection of DVDs which were a good addition for visitors. Both Kids & grown ups & suited to family viewing. In our view this is a bonus for any castle & it is the fact that we experienced what seemed to be paranormal activity. This happened at times during the night & sounded like loud wooden furniture bangs. Ladies chattering & on the last night a piano playing from the floor above perhaps. Our Tablet & laptop stopped working while there until we tried again at home. It was strange. Also a filming on camera was wiped by itself which was on the same night. Strong presences around big four poster room, but nothing too bad. But was not happy about the electrical equipment situation. But an adventure for us to look back on. Helpful friendly service & apart from the gardener and his loud pop music it was good!
