Description

A former coach house with views over open countryside. Facilities include a private hot tub and shared use of a swimming pool and games room!

‘‘...imbued with noble history...set in a dramatic and varied landscape...’’

Take a beautiful Peak District National Park setting, just 3½ miles from Bakewell, add a historic hall (first recorded in the Domesday Book), and an ancient cluster of listed buildings converted to form superb holiday cottage accommodation....and the result is the captivating blend that is Harthill Hall. Nestling in 14 acres of grounds on an upland called Priest’s Hill with excellent walking available from the doorstep, the properties have the use of an extensive range of leisure facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, solarium and treatment rooms. Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.
It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. Derbyshire’s bustling market towns, villages, hills, dales and rivers offer majestic scenery, and a rich variety of customs. Boasting a varied and beautiful landscape, they offer a blend of heritage, history and family attractions. The beautiful market town of Bakewell (3½ miles) is situated on the River Wye, crossed by a 13th-century five-arched bridge which has coffee shops and restaurants. Within easy reach are Matlock, Hall Leys Park, Chesterfield, Alfreton and Buxton. National Trust properties and gardens nearby include Riley Graves, Longshaw, Mam Tor, South Peak, Dovedale, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall. Close by are both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. Games room with free wireless internet connection (1gb per day per device). Golf and horse riding are available within 5 miles. Shop 3½ miles, pub 1 mile.

A former coach house with large glazed views over open countryside. Large living room with sofa bed (for +2) and views of countryside. Step down to farmhouse-style kitchen, flagstone floor and glazed door to outside seating area and enclosed garden. Jungle themed double bedroom with TV, antique oak four-poster bed. Lots to like but lots that needs work too, the decor was very dated and shabby in places, pots and pans were not of a suitable size for no of occupants. There were an excessive number of do's and don'ts written in mixture of passive aggressive and just plain aggressive. On the plus side the location was beautiful, the beds were super comfortable, the hot tub was a real treat, sadly the pool was too small to be of real benefit but it was nice to have. Walking in the area was stunning and it made a lovely location for a family get together - we had mentioned a special birthday and were greeted with wine and biscuits which was a lovely treat!Overall we enjoyed it but we just expected a much higher standard of finish. especially given the price we paid!

Although we enjoyed our stay, this was due to the company more so than the cottage. The cottage was very dated and looked as if it was in dire need of sprucing up. In particular, one shower (and that was an over the bath type) for the whole property is not sufficient for a large group. The only other bath did not have a showerhead attachment so you could not even wash your hair whilst having a bath. The accommodation was very small for our party of 7 plus dogs, so not sure how it would fare with 10. One bedroom was damp and cold the whole stay. All the bedrooms were on the small size compared to what we're used to. Only one bedroom had a wardrobe, so storing clothes was an issue. Our stay was not helped by our first night adventure. One of our small dogs escaped through the fence (it was dark when we got there so we could not see that small dogs could get out under the fence) of our 'enclosure'. All seven of us were looking for him, when the owner of the property opposite said 'well I hope he's not on our property, this is private land' - despite their gate being open! Very welcoming I must say. We did find the dog after half an hour of looking but this soured things from the start. On a good note, the hot tub was very good, and maintained throughout our stay, so was always ready to jump into, without any work from ourselves. The WIFI allowance was laughable though. You get a small allowance (1GB I think) per device per day. OK if you're just browsing facebook. Not good if you're working on your laptop. Even worse of you wanted to watch a match on SkyGo (as there is no satellite TV) - lasted about 10 minutes, then couldn't get onto WIFI for a day. We've stayed in a cottage the last few years over Christmas, and stayed in some very nice places. Perhaps we've been spoiled. However, this was definitely not up to the standard of previous cottages. All in all, a rather disappointing experience.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We’re sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your holiday with us. On your arrival the property was just as described when you made your booking, the number of bathrooms and facilities with in them, the free of charge internet provided is brought in via satellite and therefore has to have some limit on this which is 1GB per device / not person per day, most guests have at least 2 devices and find this to be more than ample. I was not onsite for the duration of your stay but apparently the neighbour was upset due to you allowing your dog to escape and ignoring the Private sign on her gate, most guests would check the boundary before leaving their dog unaccompanied in a strange garden. All 4 bedrooms have either a wardrobe or hanging rails with 10 hangers and a chest of drawers. Having checked our call out log for the duration of your stay we did not received a call all week regarding one of bedrooms being cold we would have been more than happy to provide an additional heater, the only call received was to fix a broken dishwasher on New Years Eve which we managed to get an engineer to to find out it had been overloaded.

We went to celebrate my parents Golden Wedding anniversary so we wanted something special - and we got it! Stunning cottages placed in the beautiful countryside. It made three generations of one family very happy and we didn't want to leave. Will definitely be going back!

My family stayed at De Ferrers to celebrate my dad's birthday a couple of weeks ago. The location of the cottage was perfect, close to Bakewell and local pubs with a beautiful view out to the countryside. When we arrived it wasn't possible to pull the cars up to the cottage to unload. This however wasn't stated in the confirmation and we ended up dragging our belongings across cobbled stones in a wheel barrow type thing. It's such a shame because if the barrier was to be lifted we could of unloaded in half the time and moved our car back to the main car park. Once inside the owners had left us a bottle of prosecco and a birthday cake which was a lovely touch and greatly appreciated. All 8 of us had massages booked on the Friday evening and Saturday morning. All fantastic thank you so much to Michelle and the other lady who covered for her on the Saturday. We felt the cottage was a little overpriced compared to similar weekend breaks we take as a family each year. The amenities inside the cottage were great (lots of kitchen equipment) but it seemed to be in need of improvement/ modernisation. Hot tub was fab and the man came to service it for us on the Sunday. Thanks for a pleasant stay.

We had a fabulous time. The grounds and surroundings are immaculate. The staff were extremely helpful before our visit. The house it's self is more than adequate. I know previous please have complained about there only being one shower but there is another bath upstairs, so we managed fine. We will definitely be staying again.

Excellent and beautiful venue. Could have done with some more kitchen implements or for it to be a bit more obvious where they were (we spent an age trying to find the can opener!). Some of the crockery and pans were a bit dated and it would benefit from some more non stick frying pans and soap in every bathroom. Perhaps a list of where the items are might help. The hot tub was fantastic and we liked the privacy of the cottage on the site.

Had a lovely time staying here, beautiful location with a well kitted out property. Everything was kept at a high standard and having our own hot tub was great as the pool was often booked out. Would definitely recommend staying here.
