Description

Dartmouth House dates back to 1745, great for larger groups of family or friends, Gullivers World and Woburn Safari Park nearby.

Originally owned by the Earl of Dartmouth and situated in the Georgian market town of Olney, Dartmouth House has records dating back to 1745. A spacious and comfortable, stone-built roadside property with the owners’ home close by, it can sleep up to twelve people. It has retained many of the original features - such as flagstone, wooden and quarry-tiled floors, beamed ceilings and fireplaces. The large, south-facing, stone-walled garden is enclosed, and its beautiful aspects may be enjoyed in all types of weather when dining or relaxing on the large verandah, which is attached to the house.
Olney (situated on the River Great Ouse) is one of the most sought-after destinations in North Buckinghamshire and is within easy driving distance of Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire, in an area with beautiful rolling countryside and many country and town attractions. Olney is located in the middle of England and Dartmouth House is handily set along a main road just 20 minutes from junction 14 of the M1 - making London very accessible. Olney itself has tea rooms, antique shops, boutiques and the William Cowper Museum and are all within easy walking distance of the property. A few minutes’ drive leads to Woburn Abbey, Castle Ashby and Bletchley Park. There is plenty to keep children entertained - from Gullivers World and Woburn Safari Park to the popular Whipsnade Zoo. For the more energetic, there are vast areas of outstanding walking and cycling country, including Salcey Forest and Emberton Park. Milton Keynes offers a different experience with its cinemas, excellent shopping, the Milton Keynes Theatre (the most popular theatre outside London) and a huge choice of sporting activites including the Snowdome. Shops 50 yards, pub 20 yards.

Large, beamed living room with wood-burning stove and flagstone-tiled floor. Spacious beamed dining room with original 18th-century wooden floor. Large, well-equipped kitchen with fitted units and quarry-tiled floor. One step down to utility with shower. Separate toilet. Six steps up to double bedroom with TV. First floor: Two double bedrooms, each with TV. Twin bedroom with TV and additional single. Four steps up from landing to two bathrooms with toilet, anti-slip flooring and heated towel rail; one with two wash basins. Second floor: Two double bedrooms, each with TV. Stayed at Dartmouth House last weekend( May 13th - 16th). It was the Perfect venue for our three generation family gathering. House quirky and very exciting for the younger members of our party. Lovely market town location with Emberton Country Park within walking distance. Great weekend enjoyed by all. Would certainly go again.

Very convenient location within walking distance of lovely town with interesting shops, cafes pubs and restaurant. Beautiful garden with outdoor undercover eating area. One glaring omission was the provision of any information about places of interest and places to eat even those in Olney. The landlady told us " it's not a touristy place"! Makes you wonder why she has a hotel and a holiday home in it. She also said they do not like to publicise other towns!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are disappointed that you decided to deduct our score by 3 marks, despite the fact that you even emailed us, following your stay, to say how much you had really enjoyed your weekend. Your score is one of the lowest we have received so far. There are restaurant brochures / scenic walks around the lake / local amenities information to be found in the lounge of the house. Guests rarely stay here for a 2 week holiday. Our town is very much a ‘short break / long weekend’ destination and this is exactly what you booked. Our house is a wonderful weekend bolt hole to unwind in, after the busy working week. A huge percentage of our guests come from London as we are very centrally located. The house attracts friendship groups and complete family generations. Our guests dine out at the lovely pubs and restaurants on the doorstep of the house and explore all the boutiques and antique shops, along with the cafes and delicatessens that we have just up the road. A huge amount of our guests time their stay to coincide with a birthday / anniversary and eat lots of cake! Also we have brides and their families, going to weddings in summer months. In the winter some guests simply relax, light the log burner /drink wine and watch films. Everyone comes to stay at our house for different reasons. We do mention other towns in the area, as I recommended to you Woburn and the Safari Park, which is 8 miles away and that is where you went on the Sunday of your stay so I am unsure as to your above comments here. You are right in saying that we also run a successful hotel business. We have a 100% occupancy rate and 90% of these guests are business men and ladies, who enjoy our lovely hotel and town after their working day. We have owned it for 17 years. We wish you well with your future breaks away.

Excellent quirky cottage-we loved the character of it. Very clean and comfortable. It would benefit from more than one shower for large groups but obviously we were aware of this when we booked and it just added to the fun of the weekend! It was a lovely treat to be welcomed with chocolates and wine and the addition of the turkey tray, Christmas tree and decorations were a fantastic surprise - thank you to the owners!

We hired this cottage for a family get together to celebrate my brother's 40th birthday. We were a party of grandparents, 5 parents and 6 children ranging from 13 months to 8 years and the cottage met our needs perfectly. The children loved the quirkiness of the layout and went back to playing hide and seek whenever we were in the house. (There are plenty of nooks and crannies and interesting ways to creep up on your opponents). The stairs are reasonably steep and there are lots of steps between rooms so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. The heater in the downstairs toilet was broken when we were there and as it was on the outskirts of the house and a cold weekend no one used it. The shower room was also interestingly placed through the utility room. However, the cottage was extremely warm and comfortable and had great character.

We loved the quirkiness of the house which has a very interesting history and some great nooks and crannies. The fact that the owner has a hotel a couple of doors away means that any possible issues can be sorted out in a timely manner. We had a lovely time and would definitely go there again. The garden is beautiful too and was a great setting for photos.

A quaint house with lots of nooks and crannies. Big safe garden for the youngster to run around in.
