Description

This cosy retreat for couples is perfect for exploring the beautiful countryside of County Durham by foot and by bike.

Perfect for exploring this beautiful part of County Durham, Curlew Cottage stands detached, part way up a hill and boasts brilliant views across the rolling countryside and hills of the county. Built in the 1800s and with views to the rear, extending over the hills of Weardale, Curlew Cottage is traditional, warm and welcoming. Ideal for a couple wanting to enjoy a quiet rural break in a very quirky cottage, the property is full of unusual and original features. On the lower ground floor guests will find a small kitchen and dining room with a very low ceiling that adds to the character of the cottage. On the ground floor is a traditional living room with a balcony area that looks out across the countryside. This is the perfect place for bird spotters, with snipes and buzzards often flying by. On the first floor there is a double bedroom with kingsize bed and a bathroom. This is a real gem of a cottage and perfect for those guests looking for a quiet holiday, Curlew Cottage really is one of a kind.
Situated right at the heart of beautiful Weardale, the small town of Stanhope offers amenities and facilities popular with guests of all ages and at any time of year. A thriving market town, Stanhope boasts numerous places to eat, drink and enjoy the local produce, including a pie shop, bakery, fish and chip shop and plenty of pubs. With the county’s only open air heated swimming pool just a short walk away, guests can also take the opportunity to enjoy a dip in the water during the summer months. This is also the perfect location for guests who enjoy walking, cycling, hill running or rambling, as well as those wanting to just enjoy a leisurely stroll through some of the most splendid countryside that the county has to offer. There are multiple established walks, public footpaths, and bridle ways that run directly through the village and out into the nearby valleys, fells and unspoilt natural woodland. Cyclists will find themselves surrounded by routes of varying difficulty with some steep climbs, north and south of the cottage, as well as the quiet roads to Waskerley or Blanchland and the off road section of the Coast to Coast route between Rookhope and Rowley. For a more leisurely mode of transport, guests can travel on the Weardale Railway, which runs between Stanhope and Bishop Auckland, and is transformed in season into the Train to Christmas Town. About a 10-minute drive away is Weardale Ski School, and the Durham Dales Centre is only a few minutes away - a great spot for discovering more about the area. Killhope Lead Mine, Beamish Living Museum, Frosterley, Wolsingham, and the cathedral city of Durham can all be reached in around a 30-minute drive. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit the natural beauty of Cumbria and the Lake District, the Durham Dales, Northumberland and Newcastle. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

We've stayed in a few holiday houses in our time, all of which we enjoyed, but this one really impressed us in terms of space, grounds, view, comfort, décor and homeliness. We were met on arrival and given a comprehensive and informative tour of the house plus a few tips on local things to do. We couldn't find fault with anything and would highly recommend Curlew Cottage. Great value for money.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Curlew Cottage. It was a lovely location, convenient for excellent local shops and pub. We loved the walking from the front door. The cottage was spotlessly clean when we arrived, and there was a very generous welcome pack to greet us. The one shortcoming of the cottage is the downstairs kitchen and dining room (which of course we knew about before we arrived). The ceiling is very low, and my husband (5ft 11in)caught his head a number of times as not only is the ceiling low, it is also uneven with bits sticking out! I just missed the worst as I am 5ft 9in. The problems with the ceiling detracted from the enjoyment of the cottage, which was a shame.

I came with my three children and we had a great time. The cottage had land where the children ran wild chasing rabbits. Shops were close by too. People were great and very welcoming. Went to high force water falls and Raby castle. The owners greeted us kindly. Was a cold week but not off putting!

The house was rather dated and was quite cold even with the heating on.there was a very low futon in the lounge to sit on plus a small 2 seater setee. The futon was very uncomfortable and the other setee was really too small for 2 people to share comfortably. On the plus side the bed was lovely and comfortable.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We were disappointed to read your review following your stay at Curlew Cottage. Virtually all furniture, flooring (carpets, rugs, bathroom flooring), kitchen white goods, lamps and light fittings were purchased in 2017 prior to letting our 19th Century country cottage. Winter in the north Pennines can be quite cold. We lived in the cottage during renovations and were snug; it was a rental for 3 years and before that, a successful Welcome holiday let for 14 years. We have mains gas central heating correctly rated for the room volumes of a double glazed, state of the art multi (17) layered roof /loft insulation. The lounge is provided with a mains gas fire as part of the design of this heating installation. Use of the fire was demonstrated during the arrival meet & greet when you were encouraged to report any problems since we can respond within 15 minutes. We provide a portable 2Kw electric blower heater should guests require a heat boost. Had you reported the concerns regarding the futon, I would have swapped this for the 2 (large) leather armchairs that are situated in other rooms of the house. Whilst we realise that the Cottage will not be for everyone, we are sad that there are not many positive points in your review and are genuinely disappointed to receive such a low score which is not at all consistent with our usual feedback.

Curlew cottage is a little gem it is as it states quite quirky with the kitchen on the lower level but the bonus is the outside space for the dogs. The owners were lovely and the welcome pack was much appreciated. There are lots of walks nearby and the village has all the amenities you need.

Great little cottage, remote yet within easy walking distance of the village with walking routes literally outside the front door. Cottage is set back off the road behind the last cottage so easy to drive past, just pull into the first gated field on your right past a few trees and the cottages and your there.
