Description

Visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Cannon Hall Farm, or venture further out to Manchester, York or Leeds.

Cuckstool Cottage is a charming, detached holiday cottage built from local stone and detailed inside with exposed beams. It is located on the edge of the of Denby Dale, a village most famous for its landmark railway viaduct and giant pies. The views from the property stretch across the village cricket ground and bowling green. Denby Dale itself has real character and offers a range of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, as well as ‘The Pie Hall’ which holds a large collection of pie memorabilia. Outside of Denby Dale, the range of activities in the area is simply amazing. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park can be reached in 10 minutes, as can Cannon Hall Farm, which is an absolute must for children. Holmfirth, of ’Last of the of Summer Wine’ fame, is just 15 minutes away, as is the National Coal Mining Museum which offers free entry and underground tours. Denby Dale has the convenience of its own train station, just a 5-minute walk from the property, and offers a regular direct service to Huddersfield and onwards to the cities of Manchester, York and Leeds. Finally, outdoor enthusiasts can explore the local area by foot or bike direct from the door on countryside that is flatter than most areas of Yorkshire. Alternatively, the Peak District National Park, with its breathtaking views and fantastic opportunities for cycling, walking and wildlife watching can be reached in around 30 minutes. this cottage was not what we were expecting, the garden is none existent, it was very noisy with the main road running at the back of the house so it was not very peaceful and the cricket green attracted the local kids to hang out there to midnight, the kitchen could have been better equipped with more basic utensils i:e a potato masher and a can opener that works, the décor could do with being updated in the lounge it is a bit tired, not keen on the step down into the lounge, could do with a better handrail as you cant grip it very well, the smallest bedroom was just a box room with no space to move in it

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. Dear Lynn We were sorry to hear that you felt the cottage did not meet your expectations. In the past we have always received very good reviews and have had several returning guests. My husband and I work very hard to provide comfortable, homely accommodation, and the kitchen and living room have usually attracted positive feedback in both high levels of comfort and equipment.. We were not aware that the potato masher was missing from the kitchen nor that the can opener did not work. Our phone number is left for guests, so one phone call would have sorted these small issues out and we would have brought you new ones straight away. The cottage is in a village location, which of course means you have the added advantage of an abundance of local amenities within walking distance. The village road at the rear of the cottage therefore does have some through traffic, though at the front of the cottage you have uninterrupted views across the cricket field and bowling green to the woods beyond, so it’s a lovely location and Denby Dale is a well regarded village. You state that the garden is non-existant but this simply isn’t true. We have a small enclosed cottage garden with flower beds, a lawned area and a sitting out/patio area on which we provide garden furniture and a BBQ, and whilst the single room is small, it does contain a full size single bed, chest of drawers, storage shelves and hanging facilities, so this is much more than a ‘box room’. Your private feedback when I asked about your holiday was that you had a ‘lovely time’ so I am sure that overall the things mentioned in your review could not have had a negative impact on your break away.
