Scottish Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

On the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, this is an ideal base for those who enjoy wildlife.

Set on a Highland estate spanning 4500 acres with hills rising to 2500ft, these four holiday properties are situated on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park with a wild flower reserve nearby, and an abundance of wildlife including ospreys and huge herds of deer. For 300 years Cistercian Monks spent half of each year at this peaceful place, making butter and cheese and brewing beer from the pure springs that continue to feed the houses. Delightful 18th-century Clover Cottage is reached from its parking area via a short track across a stream. With its own large garden with views towards the great massif of the Grampians. Claypotts is a charming 18th-century cottage, is in an utterly peaceful glen at the heart of the estate with its own enclosed garden on the banks of the River Isla. Croft End Cottage, a 15th-century cottage lies secluded behind double hedges and is a romantic yet fabulously comfortable place perfect for explorers, lovers and honeymooners. Brewlands Cottage is a 17th-century, cosy, very comfortable property in a lovely riverside location with fishing from the garden and views of high hills and surrounding quiet countryside. There are ancient wild flower meadows with rare wild yellow violets and orchids. Red squirrels live around the gardens and the walls support rare ferns and lichens which grow only in unpolluted places. Walking from the door of each cottage. Excellent golf courses at St Andrews, Carnoustie, Gleneagles and Rosemount. Glenshee ski resort is 35 minutes, as is Pitlochry with its theatre, restaurants and kilt and cashmere shops. An adventure centre 20 minutes away, with pony trekking at Balmoral Estate and many castles and stately homes to visit: Balmoral, Glamis, Blair Atholl, Scone Palace and Braemar. Visit the famous Whisky Trail. Riding centre 6 miles. The oldest tree in Europe is in Fortingall, 1 hour. Shops 12 miles, pub 2 miles.

Living/dining room with cast-iron wood-burning stove in stone fireplace, wooden floor, countryside views and country-style kitchen area with granite worktops. Sun porch. Snug with TV. Nice quiet setting although quite a trek from Blairgowrie. Our weather was cold but dry so we managed to make good use of the hot tub. Unfortunately we had not looked closely at the map when booking and just assumed it was close to Blairgowrie. Cottage was comfortable although heating the living room space which was in the old cottage was quite hard. We also ended up with a bill for £75 for the heating and electricity. While I appreciate that it will cost more at different times of the year, the cost of heating should be accounted for in the base price like all other cottages appear to do. We did not adjust the heating from how it was set when we arrived but the oil was still around £50 for the week and we were switching it off early at times. Why you charge for electricity is beyond me as you have no choice but to use it. You need the lights, the fridge, the cooker, etc., so this just looks like another way of squeezing more money out of unsuspecting holiday makers. It does mention a charge for these on the website but we did not expect anything like that. I think what made it worse was having paid for the oil heating, the cottage was still really cold so we definitely felt short changed. The welcome fact pack in the cottage also seemed to be filled with don't do this and don't do that. Not particularly welcoming. There was also a recommendation that you leave the house keeper a gratuity of £60 per week! I am afraid this is not one place that will be high on my list to come back to......

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you very much for your comments which are important for us so that we can improve our offering to you. Croftend is 30 minutes from Blairgowrie but there is an excellent pub 5 minutes away and a shop 20 minutes away. Sainsburys and Tesco also do home deliveries to save you the trouble of driving anywhere. You say that the kitchen was cold. We did notice that the thermostat valves on the radiators in that room were turned to low, so that could have been the problem. We have never known a November where the temperature dropped to minus 10 as it did during your stay. It is now an unseasonably warm 14 degrees! In the welcome pack, we are required by Health and Safety Law to mention things you need to be aware of e.g. not to allow small children to play unaccompanied in the wood a few hundred yards from the house as there is a stream running through it. We do think that most people would regard that as sensible advice. We also have lots of foreign guests, especially Americans, who always seek guidance about tips. The wording makes it absolutely clear that tipping is always entirely optional and that our comment is for “the guidance of our foreign guests” only.
