We had a lovely break at Coastguard Cottage. We were concerned after reading the reviews and expected the worst but it was not as bad as we thought it might be. Yes, the garden is overgrown but the house was clean and comfortable. We were disappointed that the aga didn't work ( took jacket potatoes and a huge joint of beef with us ) but ate out every night instead and food was good. Loved Alderby Creek and went on some lovely walks with our dog. I think it was over-priced as it did need some tlc but we would still go again.

We could only access the cottage from 4pm on the day. Due to the state of the gardens and the dampness within the property we left the following Monday and was granted a refund. The stair rail is a safety hazard as the banister was lose (very narrow treads on the stairs due to the age of the house). There was dampness in the bedrooms and on the bedding. Also there was snails in the utility area above the washing machine. The rear garden was untidy and you could not sit on the seats within the garden as they were rotten. The whole garden area was advertised as 'dog friendly' but it was not and overgrown. As the cottage was using 'septic tanks' there was an 'unpleasant overflow smell' in the downstairs shower/toilet room.

Overall standard of cottage was good, but personally I think that it would benefit from some tlc. On arrival the first impression was disappointing, the front garden was overgrown with weeds giving the impression that it was uncared for.

Nice location, let down by what can only be described as a filthy cottage. Dust and dirt literally everywhere, blood stains on duvets, soiled nappies left in kitchen bin, beds not made up, heat was useless, garden was a health hazard and certainly not dog or child friendly. Mild and dirt all over down stairs shower room ceiling and walls as was the rear entrance. A shame really, as it only needs a good clean and brush up. You only have to look at previous guests comments to realise that the owner does not take these issues on board.

The location was superb and exactly as described in the brochure but the accommodation was shabby and very disappointing, with a leaking roof, dirty floor, unloved, messy garden and walls that needed plastering in places. There was no lightbulb in the bedroom, only bed side lights and a torch. However the bed was comfortable. We had expected a higher standard of accommodation and this took the sparkle away from our holiday.

CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL! Cottages4U are GREAT and customer service is excellent - but the cottage wasn't. With excited anticipation we pulled up to the cottage on Saturday 8th August (2015) to begin our holiday. What greeted us was NOTHING like the photos on your website. The photo of the cottage must be years and years old as the fence isn't even there anymore. Judging from the complaints in the guest book, the run down cottage as been like this for a while. I booked the holiday for myself, boyfriend, two dogs and my retired parents. I was utterly embarrassed when we pulled up to the crumbling cottage and messy garden. When we walked inside, I almost fell onto the wonky legged coffee table as the old rug on the floor was curled up at the corners. You would have thought the cleaner had not been if it wasn't from the smell of bleach in the kitchen. My Mom and Dad felt they had to vaccum the carpets as they had NO WAY been done. There were chocolate wrappers and balls of collected dog hair under the sofa. There was either food or a blood stain on a sofa cushion. I found a pill of some sort just under the bed. I don't know what this was but a child could've eaten it. The 'lovely looking' chair in the main bedroom was stained and dirty. The bedside cabinets were dusty. The light in the main bedroom was broken and didn't work. The small sofas were like sitting on concrete and my back has ached since. One of the single beds that my Dad slept in had lumps in it, he thought felt like springs, and when he got the spare blanket from the cupboard to use to lessen the lumps, it was covered in dog hair. You may think all this is simply an issue with the 'cleaners', and I use that term loosly. There was also issues with crumbling walls, which was cleverly ommitted from all the photos on the website. The septic tank overflowed almost daily and left a foul smell wafting over the garden; one of the reasons I chose this cottage was for the large back garden for my two dogs, but they couldn't go out in it without wearing their extendable leads incase they walked on or went near the puddles from the septic tank overflowing, we thought it puddled when any of us had showers, so we didn't have showers every day because of this. I contacted the phone number mentioned in the 'welcome pack', but no one got back to us. The leaflets that were left in the pack were mostly out of date by years. It also said there was a bbq in the outhouse but the door was truly wedged closed and couldn't be opened incase it broke. Someone had tried to do some gardening and cut down all the bushes and they were then thrown at the bottom of the garden along with an old fence which was dangerous! Both sheds were falling down and rotting and an arched bench, by the sesspit, was rotten and overgrown. I truly am sitting here welling up as I work 4 jobs and my parents are retired and our yearly holiday together is precious and this one was horrendous. We just got through the week as best we could. We paid £866 for this and we have definatley been robbed - it should have been a £400 holiday at best. I can not remember reading anywhere about check in time. I rang the owner the day before the holiday to see and he said that we could not check in til 4pm, that is a whole day pretty much gone even though it was clearly a full day we paid for! It is such a shame. I wanted to leave the day after we got there but my elderly parents said we could still enjoy Anderby and the area, they liked the beach which was near, so I stayed for them and they no doubt felt they had to stay for me. I dreaded coming back to the cottage after a trip out. It was all in all a horrible time and I feel sorry for my parents kowing it was not a good time for them either. We are the sort of people that doesn't like to make a fuss and complain and always tries to see the best in things; but coming back and uploading the photos onto my computer has somehow made it seem worse and shows it for what it actually was. I think I was in denial at the time and just tried to look past it as I didn't think anything could have been done about it as we were there and that was that. We did NOT get what was promised and paid for and that must come under the Trade Descriptions Act of 1968. The photos were a false representation and was misleading to consumers and not fit for purpose. I booked as a result of the quaint photos on your website and the large back garden for my two dogs (as I have a small garden at home). The 'enclosed' garden was not fully enclosed as a wall was only about 4ft high and a slightly bigger dog could have jumped that easily. Hopefully this review will give people a TRUE representation of what they will expect. If you have only paid a deposit, please lose that and be happy and book another cottage. The company, Cottages4U, were sympathietic and very good and refunded a reasonable amount shortly after. I would have no complaints about them at all, JUST the cottage.

The location was fantastic ,a five minute walk from the beach. The property was very neglected with slugs in the kitchen when it rained and plaster falling off the walls in several places. The septic tank pumped effluent into the garden every few days , the owner thought this was normal .

This cottage is ideal if you have a dog. The large enclosed back garden is great for sitting out and for play. The beach is superb and only two minutes away. Inside is a little run down but comfy and the kitchen equipment is not quite as good as other places we have stayed in at that price. Also there is no internet which is not good these days. Overall though a great place to stay.
