Customers’ Choice Award 2018
This barn conversion lies close to many beaches and cycle trails, making it the perfect base for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a great area to explore.

This spacious barn conversion lies in a rural setting adjacent to a farm, just outside the old market town of St Austell and close to Charlestown, it provides a perfect spot to enjoy Cornwall. The house has a large lawned garden, which is ideal for games, picnics and barbecues. Chy Rond, which is Cornish for ‘round house’, was once the granary for the farm, and the living room, which is round, is believed to be where the donkey used to power the mill stone, to grind the wheat.
There are many excellent beaches nearby, and the beaches of Pentewan, Portmellon and Carlyon Bay are all easily accessible. The Pentewan Trail, a multi-use trail with bike hire, is very close by, where you can cycle down to Pentewan beach and village to spend a day on the golden sands. The trail links up to many cycling trails that provide an alternative route to one of Cornwall’s and the country’s famous tourist attractions, the Eden Project. The cycle path joins a network of trails right into the heart of Cornwall’s historic china clay area.
A short journey from Chy Rond will bring you to one of Cornwall’s best and most dramatic gardens, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, where you can admire the Italianate garden and explore the ‘Jungle’ garden. The pretty village of Mevagissey, with its working harbour and narrow streets that lead to the quayside, is well worth a visit. With local pubs, bars and restaurants, this quaint little traditional fishing village has sea fishing trips and a ferry to Fowey across St Austell Bay. The sea faring town of Fowey with its Royal Regatta and literary festival is also easily reached and a great day.
Other attractions in the area are Caerhays Castle and garden, a vineyard, the shipwreck and heritage centre at nearby Charlestown, which is home to tall sailing ships and is a regular set used for film and TV programmes. Nearby, in St Austell, there are local shops, bowling, swimming pools, a cinema and leisure facilities. Beach ¾ mile. Shop ½ mile, pub 1 mile and restaurant ¾ mile.

We had a wonderful week at Chy Rond. It was so spacious, comfortable and clean. The thick walls make it very warm and quiet. The house is full of character and lots and lots of books. There are many places to visit within easy reach and the like cal Asda was very useful. If it rains and you have young children the hotel at Sands Holiday Park at Pentewan has a great pool and soft play area. An excellent holiday. Thank you.

Need to be aware: Master bedroom ensuite shower does not operate correctly, Need more toilet paper and dishwashing tabs, No hand soap in master bedroom ensuite. Initially we had difficulty in obtaining the key lock safe code. None of the owners phone numbers answered but the caretakers did. The number in the documentation did not answer.

Amazing stay, in beautiful house. We stayed in Chy Rond in early September and the weather was awful, however that didn't matter because the house was fantastic. Our two young children loved the house, and we had many (many!) games of hide and seek in the quirky property. The house was incredibly well equipped with indoors entertainment. Countless books and dvds available, a very well stocked board game selection (Don't forget to check inside the chair in the sitting room) and plenty of space for 4 adults and 2 children. As mentioned the weather was not great, and rained pretty much every day, which was a shame as the garden and outside space was wonderful. Great BBQ area, and the lawn was HUGE! We still managed to get out on a couple of occasions though and the kids loved it, and peering through the fence at the chickens, and horses in the field behind. The information in the house was really useful and the instructions on the local area were very helpful. The kitchen was better equipped than our own house! With washing machine, tumble dryer, food mixers and all the gadgets (and cookery books) you could ever want to create a culinary masterpiece. We loved being on the farm, the only thing to be aware of is that it is not ideal for walking anywhere (not with young children anyway) as there are quite a lot of single track roads to get out of the property and into the nearby towns. Not an issue though as we just drove everywhere. St Austell and Charlestown are a very short drive away. We had a couple of great meals in The Longstore, and also enjoyed the pasties at the Galley. Very pleased with the whole holiday and would gladly return in the future.

This a fully equipped cottage in a good location. The house and garden are spacious and comfortable. The cockerels from neighbouring properties do start crowing early but that's to be expected in a rural location. The house conveniently has a locked box so our arrival at midnight wasn't a problem. We would definitely book this cottage again.
