Had a lovely week with our family for my husband's retirement, it was in a good place and the house was well equipped.

Lovely house-spotlessly clean. Fabulous welcome chocolate cake! Shame that the local pub has closed down so had to get in the car if we wanted an evening out. Furniture in downstairs lounge could do with replacing and showers lacking in power-some just a dribble of water. However, overall a lovely holiday home. Would return.

Our party of 15, age range from 9-80 years had a wonderful stay. The owners provided a welcoming pack which included a huge chocolate cake and more than a dozen farm eggs! Every bedroom was beautifully furnished and had an en suite bathroom. There were two sitting rooms and a large and amazingly well-equipped kitchen, plus a log fire and a piano! The owners live in a separate part of the house, which was reassuring, but they were never obtrusive. The area around Winterbourne Abbas is stunning with much to see and do. We were able to visit Abbotsbury and Lyme Regis and several beautiful local villages. Recommendation to local pub in Portesham was spot on and much appreciated. The house itself is old and really interesting, the children especially loved the two staircases, which facilitated various games. All in all, a superb stay.

The cottage is well equipped: being supplied with towels and toilet roll was really useful and the welcome basket with milk, bread, eggs and a homemade cake made settling in much easier. You can tell that the cottage used to be run as a guest-house in a good way with hairdryers and TVs in every room. The only niggle was that the parking was sometimes awkward.

Fantastic place to stay for larger groups. We took our 2 Great Danes who had a fantastic holiday in the big enclosed garden. Everything you need is at the cottage it's like a home from home. Kitchen is massive and has more than enough equipment if you want to cater for groups. The village is beautiful and a great location for Dorchester, Weymouth and all sorts of attractions. Welcome pack on arrival added a personal touch from the owners and the chocolate cake was delicious. The rooms are all ensuite, very clean and comfortable. Can't wait to return.

The occassion was a family weekend running from Friday afternoon through to Monday morning (3 nights). The party comprised a mix of ages (from 6 to 83) with some only able to stay a couple of nights due to having to work on Monday. The owners are very pleasant and we had a quick introduction to the property, mainly the kitchen and dining area (not a full house tour) with the emphasis very much on the keys to the property and the dos and don'ts of the parking. Herein comes the first challenge for large parties staying at the property - see below. There was also an excellent 'Welcome Pack' for us in the kitchen comprising of milk, tea, coffee, a packet of cookies, fresh local eggs and a superb chocolate cake (really excellent cake to be honest). That was a very nice touch. Parking : At the rear of the property there is an enclosed drive which can comfortably take three cars - perhaps four small ones at a push and if you do not mind shuffling cars around in the single track road that runs alongside the cottage. There is a small grass area / garden adjacent to the drive that could also be parked on if needed (but would not do the grass much good). The gate to the drive can be closed. We were told we could also park under a cherry tree on this single track road if the car was tucked in as tight as it could be to the hedge and not blocking access for others. Not ideal. At the front of the property are '4 parking spaces'. These are not reserved nor do they seem to belong to the cottage. On a couple of occassions when returning to the cottage from trips out we found other cars in the spaces. On Monday morning local parents dropping their children at the nearby bus stop parked outside. We were advised to park here first. Parking at the front is tricky due to the non-stop traffic on the main road and lack of options to turn around near the cottage. The spaces are not huge and a well worn white line marks out the parking area from the pavement (you effectively park on the pavement). You need to get very close to the front wall of the small garden at the front of the cottage and there is little room to manoeuvre a car of any size. I would not feel comfortable leaving a very expensive car at the front fo the property for long. If staying for a period I would just park here and leave the cars for the duration of the break using the cars parked at the rear of the property for trips as you know you will be able to park on your return. If you only have 3 or 4 cars then this is probably not an issue but maybe you also would not book a place of this size for a smaller group. Accommodation : The house itself is spacious (deceptively so - like a tardis), quite comfortable and well equipped. Enough areas to socialise but also rooms to escape for a bit of peace and quiet. There are two lounge areas, one large dining area and a big kitchen with plenty of utensils, tools and utilities. We enjoyed a BBQ on the small, enclosed patio area using the several outside tables and chairs provided. The downstairs is very well sound proofed from the A35 traffic noise but the bedrooms less so even with the windows closed. It was a very warm weekend when we stayed so opening windows at night was essential and it was not easy to sleep with the incessant traffic noise which seemed to go on all night. The house would also benefit from a downstairs toilet which would save folks having to clamber up the stairs to get to their en-suite rooms or to the one communal (though reserved for one bedroom) bathroom when they needed to powder their nose. The stairways are not as severe as advertised although care needs to be taken and would probably not be suitable for the more elderly, infirm or very young. The most disappointing aspect of the house was the cleanliness. It was not good especially in the kitchen and lounge areas. We had to wash up a lot of crockery and utensils before using as they were dirty and we found a mop in a bucket in the corner of the kitchen which was filled with very dirty, quite smelly water. No idea how long that had been there. There were food remains found down the side of the chairs in the lounge and some of the bathrooms were also a bit grubby (hair in plugholes, etc). Overall : It was OK. Would probably not stay there again due to the location (being right on the main A35 and not Winterbourne Abbas or Dorset). Spacious and well-equipped house, lovely welcome pack, nice owners but parking a challenge for parties with more than 4 cars and not as clean as one would have expected.
