The Old Stables is a brilliant base for exploring the area. After a day out, retreat back here and enjoy the views.

In the quaint village of Leigh, just south of the picturesque abbey town of Sherborne in north west Dorset, this converted listed barn is set in an L-shape around a courtyard on one side and with lovely country views over Thomas Hardy’s famous Blackmoor Vale on the other. It offers an excellent holiday base to explore north west Dorset and south Somerset. it has been renovated to a high standard with exposed beams, is tastefully furnished, and has use of a communal games room with a snooker table, table football and darts. Though set on the edge of an organic farm (but in a non working part), the owner would be delighted to show guests around the farm, which is only a short walk away from the cottages. There is also a small flock of sheep and chickens in the cider orchard close by. There is superb country walking on the doorstep, a village shop within walking distance, golf nearby, horse riding, and water activities such as fishing, yachting, boating, sailing and canoeing at Halstock Reservoir. Within easy driving one can visit the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its prototype of Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of vintage motor cars, and Montacute House and Gardens (one of the many historic houses in the area). To the north into south Somerset, spend days exploring Glastonbury with its famous and enchanting Tor, Wells cathedral city and Bishops Palace, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Caves, and the Georgian City of Bath with its delightful Roman baths, Pump Room, museums and of course shops and restaurants. Travel south and the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach, with the popular seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth, all offer many attractions, sights and activities to enjoy, or more locally Sherborne Abbey and Castle (5 miles) and Dorchester market town (12 miles) are not too far. Shop 400 yards, pub 1 mile.

The cottage is superb; extremely well equipped and everything was in perfect working order and clean. Church Farm is beautifully situated, surrounded by fields, near the church in the heart of the village. The owner is very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The lounge and kitchen are big, ideal for two families or one large group. The area is great for dog owners. We will definitely be back and recommend the cottage to everyone for a superb holiday.

Had a great week in Leigh. The Old Stables was amazing, from friendly owner to great accommodation which was just right for the family - 6 adults, a toddler and a baby. It was exactly right for us. The weather was cold and dry but it didn't stop us exploring - Sherborne, Dorchester, Weymouth and the Sealife Centre, Lulworth and Monkey World and a nice walk around the village itself. Had a good meal out at Chetnole but catered for ourselves most of the week. Would positively recommend this accommodation.

It's in a gorgeous location the owner Chris was very friendly and helpful.I felt that it had been shut up for a while and needed a little dust and clean through before we arrived.bedding and towels were immaculate though.

A great place to stay especially if you are attending a function at the village hall. Loads of space for 8 adults and a toddler. The enclosed garden was a bonus. The views are fantastic, including the Milky Way at night. Staff friendly and helpful. Couldn't have been better! We'll certainly visit again.

Stunning location with access to fields and a lovely lake (fenced off so no accidental access from animals or children). We loved sitting in the garden and looking out over the fields. Weymouth 45mins away and we found most places we wanted to visit around 45mins travelling. Friendly owner if you needed anything. We would definitely stay again. It was the first holiday for our toddler and I couldn't have asked for anything else. (Only reason for an 8 on equipment is we found the storage heaters difficult to regulate the temperature at night but that is probably our inexperience with them and the variable weather early Sept!)

A perfect holiday cottage for us as a family. Three couples, one toddler and a dog. Plenty of space and so clean and comfortable. The owner was always on hand. He made us very welcome, was available for minor problems, (blown light bulbs), full of knowledge and advice on best places to visit but never intrusive. The farm setting and surrounding countryside views were idyllic and the sunsets were just amazing. The Old Stables were homely, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Contrary to some of the comments in the visitors book we had absolutely no trouble with WiFi connection all week and my son was able to watch films on his laptop. We enjoyed cooking on the beautiful range cooker and having family meals and games evenings round the huge wooden kitchen table. Alternatively we found some lovely places to eat out, especially The New Inn at Cerne Abbas. A perfect base for exploring the gorgeous Dorset countryside, coastline, castles, churches, inns and shops and not forgetting Monkey World and Wookey Hole caves. The only thing which would have improved The Old Stables for us would have been an extra toilet/shower room. Two bathrooms/toilets especially when one was en suite to the master bedroom sometimes proved tricky in the mornings for 7 people. But it would not stop us returning to this lovely place nor indeed recommending it to all our friends.
