Description

The Old Stables is a brilliant base for exploring the area. After a day out, retreat back here and enjoy the views.

In the quaint village of Leigh, just south of the picturesque abbey town of Sherborne in north west Dorset, this converted listed barn is set in an L-shape around a courtyard on one side and with lovely country views over Thomas Hardy’s famous Blackmoor Vale on the other. It offers an excellent holiday base to explore north west Dorset and south Somerset. it has been renovated to a high standard with exposed beams, is tastefully furnished, and has use of a communal games room with a snooker table, table football and darts. Though set on the edge of an organic farm (but in a non working part), the owner would be delighted to show guests around the farm, which is only a short walk away from the cottages. There is also a small flock of sheep and chickens in the cider orchard close by. There is superb country walking on the doorstep, a village shop within walking distance, golf nearby and water activities such as fishing, yachting, boating, sailing and canoeing at Halstock Reservoir. Within easy driving one can visit the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its prototype of Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of vintage motor cars, and Montacute House and Gardens (one of the many historic houses in the area). To the north into south Somerset, spend days exploring Glastonbury with its famous and enchanting Tor, Wells cathedral city and Bishops Palace, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Caves, and the Georgian City of Bath with its delightful Roman baths, Pump Room, museums and of course shops and restaurants. Travel south and the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach, with the popular seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth, all offer many attractions, sights and activities to enjoy, or more locally Sherborne Abbey and Castle (5 miles) and Dorchester market town (12 miles) are not too far. Shop 400 yards, pub 1 mile.

Large, beamed living room. Large, beamed, well-equipped kitchen/dining room with electric range (for cooking), TV and tiled floor. Double bedroom. Twin bedroom. Bunk bedroom. As a family we have visited Dorset for the last 10years usually in farm type houses and have never been disappointed, this year was well up to standard and very enjoyable.

A very tranquil stay and lovely break in Dorset. The old stables is a great location, well laid out and well equipped. Leigh is so quiet, peaceful and beautiful, nearby Sherborne is a really nice town and the Jurassic coast is just a short drive away. All in all a highly recommended place to stay.

A wonderful setting - lovely sitting out of an evening with countryside views watching the sun go down and enjoying the peace. Very comfortable, with nice furnishings and good beds. It was a great location for exploring northwards to Wells and Glastonbury and southwards to Lyme and Lulworth. Would love to revisit

We're frequent visitors to Dorset and we've stayed in many cottages. The Old Stables is one of the best we've stayed in and has everything you'd want and is in a great spot for all the local attractions. The owner was really great and showed the kids around the working farm. We all had a great time.

We had a fantastic family weekend at the old stables for my 70th birthday. It is a great place to stay fantastic location and every thing you could possibly need was supplied. It was very clean and tidy and the owner was very friendly and helpful. Would love to go again.

We stayed for the weekend of 12th May and took our elderly parents, who absolutely loved the bedroom upstairs with the ensuite, they could lay in bed and look out of the low cottage window and see wonderful views. The property was very welcoming and homely. It was spotless and very equipped. We were lucky to have good weather and it was lovely to sit out in the garden surrounded by beautiful views and walk down to the pond. We would recommend the Harvest Moon in Middlemarsh for something to eat, and we had the fish and chips from the mobile van in the next village. Very tasty but large portions. The landlord was a friendly chap and was approachable. Overall a lovely stay and would definitely come back.

The property was lovely. Beautiful large family kitchen where we enjoyed our hearty breakfasts and a roast dinner. Wonderful views out the back and access right into the fields to enjoy the fresh air and walk the dog. Delightful and friendly owner. Would highly recommend and hope to return one day.

this was by far the best holiday weve had. the games room was a hit with my teenage son. the area is fantastic for dog walking. the owner came around an invited to take us for a tour of the farm....which we did. we saw a calf that had only been born a few hours previous to our arrival. it's not far from Weymouth, so we had a chilly walk on the beach too. there is a local chippy van that parks up on a Wednesday at leigh...and at the spar in Yetminster on a Friday n Saturday.....he is definitely worth a visit. lovely food.

The owner Chris is a real nice guy, we asked to see his farm and although busy he found time out of his day to take us. The Old stables location was everything we wanted, quiet with beautiful views and a lovely pub 1 mile away. It is also very central to surrounding attraction 1hr from longleat and 1hr from Poole. The cottage is warm and cosy and well maintained. The only negative is that while playing the obligatory game of hide and seek we found a dirty plate under the bed and some dirty clothes in the upstairs en-suite. we had also booked the cottage for a week so a midweek towel change would of been nice or a least a heated towel rail to dry them. Also in the Upstairs en-suite the shower had almost zero pressure, so unfortunately we had to take long hot soaks in the tub!!!! Although there were a few negatives overall the bedding was clean and we had the best stay, with a great Host. I would defiantly return to The Old Stables
