Excellent holiday overall. Burrow House met pretty much all of our expectations. Some of the fittings and fixtures are dated but useable. My only criticism was that there was no Internet or wifi available so felt a little cut off.

Burrow House, is probably best suited to those with dogs. However the garden isn't secure and is on quite a busy main road, although its set back. When we arrived the cottage smelt a mixture of cleaning products and dog and there was quite a bit of dog hair on the kitchen floor. The bathroom could use some redecoration as there is mould on the walls and peeling paint, the beds are not very comfy and the lamps not bright enough to be useful - i.e too dim to read in bed! Overall really add insult to injury, hot water needs to be paid for which we knew so we had some £1 coins in anticipation - however the meter wouldn't take the new coin. The owner suggested we spend our holiday asking in shops for the old style coin. Not happy!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. We are sorry that you were disappointed with Burrow House. We are delighted to welcome dog owners to the cottage, one of few properties in the National Park where people can holiday with their pets. Whilst the garden is enclosed and gated as stated in the description, we would always recommend that children and animals are supervised. There are often rabbits in the garden which can get dogs quite excited. We note that you found some mildew in the bathroom and apologise for this. We, the owners , visited immediately after your stay and addressed the issues you raised. The coin meter has been removed and all heating lighting and hot water is included. Regrettably during the week you stayed, our electrician had been quite ill and this upgrade was delayed. You advised that you contacted the owners, but at no stage did you speak to us about your concerns. When you contacted our housekeeper she advised re obtaining some pound coins for the old coin meter and drove down from Carlisle at the earliest opportunity and donated £10 of coins to cover the remainder of your stay. Burrow House is a charming, cosy and very comfortable 17th century cottage in a prime spot and we do have many repeat visitors.

Would have been useful to know about the road closure prior to holiday

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your high score for your stay at Burrow House and we hope you had a fabulous holiday. We're sorry we were unable to indicate to our guests when the road works were going to affect the section of road near the cottage but it seemed to have been only for a short period of time and I hope that it didn't disrupt your travel to and from Burrow House too much. We have since heard from the Waterworks company that this section should be complete before the end of March 2017.

A beautiful cottage. Spotless and warm on our arrival, even a cheeky bottle of wine left and chocolates to greet us. Spacious with plenty of room for a family of six. A great time spent over Christmas and new year.

The Cottage was clean, and very comfortable, and we enjoyed the Log/Coal fire on an evening. Logs and kindling were kindly provided which lasted two evenings. There was ample parking space for our two cars. The location was a bit isolated, and I was slightly disappointed that although in the heart of the Lake District, there was nowhere to walk my dog. Narrow footpaths, and fast traffic, made it a daunting experience outside of the garden, which, thankfully was just about adequate. In this day and age we found a week without "wifi" a bit of an inconvenience. We were aware that this service was not provided, and thought nothing of it, however, we did miss it more then we thought we would. On the whole we were delighted with our stay, and will definitely consider Burrow House in the future. If "wifi" were to be available we would almost certainly be back. Thank you to the Proprietor for ensuring everything was up to a decent standard.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments and we're glad you enjoyed your stay at Burrow House. I know that a lot of our guests use the Outward Bound Centre next door from the house to walk their dogs but also immediately across the road from the house there is a public footpath to Cartmel Fell via Birks Road which leads to an open and wooded area which makes it ideal for dogs. Since you stayed, we've upgraded the property in last 2 weeks and we hope that you stay with us again in the future.
