Excellent touring base

This cosy traditional semi detached fisherman’s cottage is tucked away in the corner of a quiet side street in the fishing town of Macduff. The owners’ family home for several generations, it has retained its original character yet offers contemporary facilities. The rear of the house offers partial sea views and there is a steep rear terraced garden with a patio, for sitting out on sunny afternoons. Macduff has its history steeped in fishing and boasts an aquarium showcasing the marine life found in these parts. Banff is noted for its architecture, in particular Duff House which contains masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland. Golfing, walking, cycling and fishing are available in the area. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

Ground floor: Living room. Dining room/kitchen. 1 double bedroom (for alternative sleeping). Shower room with toilet. First floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin.

    Booked 4 weeks and only stayed 9 days, if we could put minus for rating I would. Holiday began with blocked toilet for 3 days and owner was aware of this 3 days before we arrived and done nothing about it. Got told by use the local pub or cafe if you need to use the toilet until sorted. Parking was at premium with all the vans/cars parked there so be prepared to walk. Cleanliness we would say could have been 100 times better. Extremely cluttered with owners possessions, it was extremely cold as no real heating, it also smelt and felt really damp & mouldy. Last straw was the ceiling started to fall down in downstairs room. Cooker did not work as burnt a pizza in 5 minutes. Also boy racers revving cars in docks car park every night until early hours. Complained and only got 1 weeks money back. Avoid if possibly can.

    Response on behalf of the Owner; When the renters phoned to tell me that the toilet was partially blocked, I immediately arranged for the plumber to clear the drains on his next working day – the Monday. He called me mid-morning on the Monday to tell me that the drain in the street (responsibility of the Water Authority) was causing the problem. I called the Water Authority and the blockage was cleared that afternoon. As can be seen from the website photos, the cottage is in a cul-de-sac, and as stated on the website, there is no off street parking. In regards to cleanliness, the property has always been given full marks by the Welcome Cottage inspector. In addition, because of the renters two dogs, I had considerable difficulty removing all the shed hair after they left and the odour of the dogs lingered in the property. The website describes the property as an old fisherman’s cottage – in addition, there are numerous photos (one of each room) on the website, clearly showing what the cottage is like. There is no central heating, as stated on the website however; there are eleven electric heaters within the property, giving an output of approximately 22kw, much more than sufficient to heat a low ceilinged cottage. Two polystyrene ceiling tiles, weighing less than a 1p coin were dislodged from the ceiling in a room which is only available to renters by arrangement, but which had been used. Had the oven not been working, the pizza would have been raw. It is working, and had the renters used the instructions provided, they may have had more success. I’m not in a position to comment on the use of the highways by drivers. The renters were delighted to accept the refund of one week, at the time. I also asked to have access to the property for half an hour during the first week, to check it, and the renters were obstructive, and prevented me from doing so.

    this was our first holiday in years, on arrival there was a welcome pack, which was lovely, and plenty leaflets about what to do in the surrounding areas etc.i had spoken to the owner beforehand and asked if all the normal facilities were there and assured they were. there was no washing machine, which would have been helpful to know beforehand as we had a small dog with us. the house had an aroma of not being aired in ages, this triggered my allergies, I'm not sure if the aroma disappeared over the week or we became nose blind to it. i did think the cottage was in need of a good clean and airing. on the other hand, the plus sides were, it was full of character, beds were comfy and clean, we fell at home in it. i do think that whoever the caretaker is should air the house and give it a going clean, remove cobwebs etc before guests arrive, because for similar cost we could have got a better cottage for our money
